MY SISTER’S KEEPER MY SISTER’S KEEPER by Jodi Picoult is about a thirteen year old girl named Anna Fitzgerald and her older sister Kate. Anna was conceived for the sole purpose of being a “donor baby’ she was genetically designed to be the perfect match for her sister Kate who has a rare form of leukemia. By the age of eleven, Anna had already been hospitalized eight times for all different procedures and surgeries that she did not need. She donated her stem cells, white blood cells, and bone marrow. Kate and Anna were more than sisters, they were best of friends. They use to sit out in the back yard and talk about life, boys, movies, songs. Kate had reviled to Anna she was ready to die; she had made peace with it. She wanted the pain to end, and she did not want Anna to go through anymore procedures, surgeries, or anything painful because of her. Anna loved her sister and would do anything for her even if it meant refusing a procedure that could possible save her sisters life. Upon Kate’s request Anna refused the kidney transplant and all other procedures. Anna realized at a young age she was very special, she was not like the rest of the children her age. Whenever her sister got sick and had to go to the hospital, so did Anna, however, she was not sick but she was admitted anyway. She was admitted so her sister’s doctors could quickly use what they needed from her. The last time Anna was admitted it was to take one of her kidneys. Anna refused the procedure she said “I have value; I am a person, not just spare parts”. Anna’s mother and father were devastated to hear her say that, but Kate was happy. Kate had made peace with dying, she often wished for her death because her pain was so unbearable at times. Kate’s wish came true; she passed away in her sleep with all her family around her.
