In fact, she called the recruiter Saturday morning by that evening he was at the house signing papers for enlistment. After the papers were signed, I was very happy until reality set in telling my grandparents. My grandparents were born in an era when African Americans did not have many opportunities, blacks were regulated to humiliating jobs, and the military was no exception to them. During their adolescent years, my grandfather could not go to school, so he worked at Alcoa as a laborer. And my grandmother had a high school education.
So I enrolled into Lenoir Community College and decided to major Early Childhood Education. I earned my Associates Degree in Early Childhood Education in the year two thousand and nine. While I was working on my Associate’s degree I started working at WAGES Head Start as an educare teacher. So when I received my degree I was promoted to a lead teacher with my own classroom. I felt like that was enough for me at the time and so I put off going back to school to get my bachelor’s degree.
The when I was 14 years old I had the opportunity to came here, to the United States to meet with my mother and other relatives. I came in the summer 05. When I came here my first obstacle was the language. In my country I just learned the basic stuff like colors, the personal pronoun, etc, if helped me at little bit but I knew that if I wanted to have success here I had to learn the English language. I took some courses in the summer and I also practiced with my little sister, she was born here so she helped me in the pronunciation part at home.
Two weeks later, I decided that in order for me to make “good” money, upgrade my skills, and begin a career; I needed to return to college. When I graduated business school, in 2001, my skills were above average. I went straight from high school to
Before I finished the high school, I started to work for a big tools company as a salesman helper (where I learned many new things). After one year I had, the opportunity to become a salesman. That job gave me many opportunities to continue studying because I had a flexible schedule. I finished high-school, and I drop out of school for two years because I liked to make money and I forget the school. Fortunately I changed my mind and went back to school to finish the university.
When I was six, my parents decided they needed a change of scenery, so we moved to Titusville, Florida. Only 15 minutes from the space center, it was an interesting place to live. My mom got a job at the center, and we got free passes to see launches. I learned a lot about the space program and must have viewed 15 take-offs. After a while, the excitement wore off and seeing a launch when walking out to get the morning paper was something everyone took for granted.
I started searching for my records from my previous high school so I could apply to college. After many calls to the New Orleans School District I was told that my records of graduation weren't available at the time but they were still searching. This took months leading to years and still nothing was found. This is when I resorted to plan B. I began taking GED subject tests at Green River Community College to speed up my process of attending college. I finally got my GED this summer and I have been applying to colleges ever since.I got back to practicing on my trumpet and also brushing up on my reading and math skills.I want to play in a band again and be able to teach music and also incorporate physical therapy into all this.
This gave me the opportunity to learn the language and get my diploma, but I was away from my country, my family and friends. Then, when I was in America; I met the love of my life, got married and started a family. This changed the course of my life and the path I thought my life was going to take. Eventually, I began working on a second bachelor taking classes at college here in America. During my first year at the college I got pregnant.
Because it was so easy for me to get all A in first semester; gradually, I began wasting time. Go to the bar, smoke, drinking and play for a long time, it resulted me fail two classes in the second semester, Until I met a girl who is 2 years younger than me, I changed my thought. She is a hard-working student and get 4.0 GPA so far and she will transfer to UC Berkeley next year. Her desire to advance encourages me to merge into the right way, and she and I fall in love with each other. A girl let me pick up my confidence again and her attitude for study stimulate my progress in the same time.
The Boys & Girls Club ran several different sports programs so I was always there. One year a month or so before summer I was about fifteen (15). The Director made an announcement that they will be hiring a teen to run the lunch program for the summer. At that time the opportunity seemed perfect, but the only problem was that I wasn’t the only person interested. ---What should I do---- Later on day all I could think about was how could I get that job.
