My Papa’s Waltz The tone in the poem can be described as resentful, protective and loving. The title of the poem is an example of the irony used throughout the poem to emphasize the attitude of the persona, being the boy , towards the subject of his father. Stanza one: ”The whiskey on your breath could make a small boy dizzy; but I hung on like death; such waltzing was not easy. These lines show the mournfulness of the persona as well as the love he had for his father. Line 3 is symbolic of the persona holding onto his father’s memory and not wanting to let go of the short time they spent together. Therefore, instead of letting go of his fathers memory, he puts a positive spin on the negative situation comparing the beating to waltzing. The tone in stanza two is somewhat resentful from his mothers point of view. This is because they’re rough housing caused her pans to slide from off of the kitchen shelf. It can be inferred from the last two lines in the stanza that the personas mother was displeased and concerned only with her pots and pans. The personas tone is protective in stanza three when he speaks of the battered hand that held his wrist, probably to hold out his hand to receive lashes or to drag him. The persona also speaks of how when his father missed, the belt buckle would scrape his right ear. This is another example of the persona still clinging to the memory of a father by placing a positive spin on a negative situation, in this case the situation is being beaten with a belt and having the belt buckle scrape his ears. However, the persona makes it appear as though his ear brushed against the belt buckle when his father missed a step during the waltz. In the final stanza of the poem, the personas tone is not only protective but loving as well. Stanza four reads: “You beat time on my head With a palm
