My Nursing Practice

This class in many ways has changed my nursing practice. It has made me look at my wants and needs as a nurse. It also has had me exam how I have been practicing and caring for the patient. I have learned about the process of reflection in my nursing practice, my beliefs within my practice, nursing ethics in my practice, delegation in my practice, and the importance of following evidence-based practice in my nursing. All of these topics have made me look at the way I practice as a nurse and have made me become a better nurse.
I have learned to use reflection more in my nursing practice to help me preform better and improve my nursing skills. Reflection has also helped me to better communicate with patients and colleagues. By using reflection on a daily basis I have found that I can learn something new about how I practice almost everyday. There are many variables guiding me as a nurse in my everyday practice.
I am constantly weighing my values and beliefs through critical thinking as I complete each shift. Before taking this course I never thought my own values and beliefs affected my nursing process. I am learning that we all have different values and beliefs. Those values and beliefs influence the choices we make and every aspect of our lives.
As a nurse I strive to provide the best care for my patients physically, mentally and spiritually. I guide them and their family through the stress and emotional confusion that the illness may put them through from start to finish. I educate my patients and their families and act as an advocate for my patients and return control of their care to their hands by knowing their choices and options and supporting their decisions. I support my colleagues and treat everyone with respect and understanding.
