Also the ocean is so beautiful and unforgettable. The sounds of the waves coming from the massive deep blue ocean and washing up on the shore of the white sand beach, or the sound of them crashing up against the sharp jagged rocks of the coast line are soothing. Something about the rhythmic timing of each wave causes a relaxing sensation and can almost put you into a deep sleep. The sleep would be hard to come out, not because it’s impossible but only because you wouldn’t want to. Although some individuals may find them extremely annoying I enjoy the sound of the sea gulls on the beach.
The whole atmosphere was very welcoming. Getting out of the taxi, I was hit by a weightless breeze that carried a slight scent of the ocean. The trees were beginning to yellow and the sound of seagulls filled the air. I didn’t see much traffic, but pedestrians filled the narrow streets. The buildings were old; the brick was crumbling and the paint sills were cracked and peeling, due to the many coats
The creature’s graceful movement entranced me, I was spellbound by its magnificent beauty. As I followed the butterfly, the world around me began to transform. The desert shrubs around me began reaching towards the heavens, becoming mammoth green oaks. Green grass sprung forth from the desolate soils, flowers blossomed around the newborn plants and its sweet scent replaced the choking haze I had become so accustomed to. Suddenly I was in a different world.
Stare at the painting for a moment, I suddenly understand that nature always has two faces. On the left side, we have a peaceful nature where green evergreen trees grow straight up, a beautiful yellow beach, and some Indians people are trying to prepare their canoes. Up on the sky, the Sun is being blocked by clouds; still, the source of light is trying to lead its shining rays to the beach – creating a mysterious picture of a cascade descending on a mountain in the background. Nevertheless, on the right side is a total different face of nature – a violent storm coming toward the peaceful beach. The ocean, with its rough waves, is pounding the shore, where some Indians are struggling to pull their canoes out of the violent water; in addition, dark clouds have already half covered the right sky, blocking the sun’s lights wherever they can reach.
The novel begins with a rich description of the setting. Steinbeck uses descriptive language to indicate that the area is a place of rest. The specific colors, foliage, and animals that are mentioned create a respite, even for those boys and men from the ranches who beat a path to the water. For example, Steinbeck uses the following images to suggest that this place is a place of comfort and that the Salinas River is a sanctuary. Examples: • “The water is warm too, for it has slipped twinkling over the yellow sands in the sunlight before reaching the narrow pool” (p.1).
John Steinbeck uses animal imagery to express and introduce characters, events and themes in 'Of Mice and Men.' Steinbeck also uses nature, to convey events and settings in a subtle way. In section one of 'Of mice and Men' Steinbeck uses various colours to help the reader visualise the clearing as a tranquil and peaceful place. By describing the Salinas River as 'deep and green' the reader instantly envisages the water to be refreshing, mysterious and untouched. In addition, Steinbeck suggests that the clearing is full of sunlight: 'The water is warm too, for it slipped twinkling over the yellow sands.'
At first, Rainsford is elated to find land; he describes the sound of the waves breaking on the shore as “the most welcome he had ever heard” (Connell 3). After being thrown off the ship into the cold, dark waters, the island becomes a safe haven for Rainsford. However, the island is not as friendly as it seems. The hidden dangers of the island are exposed when the “muck [sucks] viciously at [Rainsford’s] leg as if it were a leech” (Connell 13). The island that Rainsford believed would shelter and protect him turns out to be misleading.
Due to this problem, people resort to throwing their used napkins, cans, and wrappers on the floor. The subway platforms are home to sticky surfaces where your feet get caught and odor saturated areas. There’s always soda or coffee spills that you have to constantly keep looking at you feet to make sure that you don’t step in anything. Not only are the platforms dirty, but the subway cars are extremely filthy. The amount of gum that is stuck on the seats, handrails, and windows is getting out of hand.
We put our scuba gear on, and begin the hunt to the river’s floor, to pick up left behind treasures. The water was a bit muggy underneath, all you see was dirt on the ground, tubers hands and legs just floating around, coins laying, a few broken watches, and a bunch of trash. We actually didn’t find treasure, but the experience was fun. I took advantage of everything that I got to do that day. Swimming in the water, sunbathing, eating juicy burgers straight from the grill, tubing down the river, scuba diving to find lost treasure, and enjoying the beautiful scenery the river offers.
It was a Sunday morning when I decided to walk across the street from my house to the beach. I felt deeply alive on that cool day, sipping my coffee with the warm sun beaming on my face. The air was clean and seemed like food as I took in each breath like it was good for my spirit. The sound of the waves was melodic in nature as they rolled up gently against the shoreline. The clouds were perfectly pillowed without a hint of grey in color, and the sky more blue than usual which provided the ultimate backdrop.
