His motto was "speak softly but carry a big stick." He came into power with remarkable ideas including the square deal. He would take the power away from industrialists while he controlled big business in the White House. He would soon become known as a Trust-buster. Roosevelt used American power for American interests and was quoted, "I am an American first and last." Although some historians argue that Roosevelt acted like a six-year-old throughout his presidency and that he didn't think things through, we can admire his magnificent leadership qualities. He was a very audacious man who graduated magna cum laude from Harvard.
It it over-simplistic to state that opposition was successful or unsuccessful in Russia from 1855 and 1964. The effectiveness of opposition in Russia had to be evaluated according to the regime in power. For example, the opposition to Tsarism under Alexander II was unsuccessful as his assassination led to reactionary Tsarist rule for thirty six more years. However, the opposition under Nicholas II’s rule was highly successful, helping to lead to a communist government. All Russian governments in this period faced strong opposition to their regime with the period as a whole punctuated by riots, disturbances and revolutions.
Paulina Cruz Period 4 Mrs. Deturk Peter the Great Peter the Great was an outstanding ruler. He was born on June 9 1682 and passes away January 28, 1725. He had a character of being demanding, concerning, and very sagacious. Many people believe he has ruled for adverse causes; for example, he has murdered his son. However, most of what he has done results in a very favorable manner for Russia.
From 1800 to 1950, there was much change within the Russian government. The political policies and beliefs of Nicolas I, Alexander II, Alexander III, and Nicolas II were in a constant fluctuation a short period of time. Nicolas I and Alexander III were the leaders who were against reform and enforced extreme Communist ways upon Russia while Alexander II and Nicolas II were the ones who wanted reform. There was another major change in Russia’s government due to the shift from Lenin to Stalin. Lenin was a triumphant ruler who was the mastermind behind many good things that came out of Russia.
Assess and account for the extent to which the oligarchs and security officials (siloviki) have exercised power in Russia since 1991? Oligarchs rose as a class at the end of the Soviet Union in 1991 and increased their wealth, influence and power very quickly in Russia’s post-soviet economic climate. The Oligarch class of post-soviet Russia is a powerful one, the hold over Russia’s political and economic life was immense. The election of Vladmir Putin was arguably one of the biggest setbacks to the rise of the Oligarchs. This paper hopes to analyse as to whether the Oligarch and Siloviki were a positive or hindrance in Post-Soviet Russia and how their role has change in Putin’s Russia.
“Stalin changed the nature of Russian government more than any other ruler” How far do you agree 1855-1964? In many ways it could be argued that the nature of Russian government changed little during this period - ‘History repeats itself, only behind new masks’. All of Russia’s governments, with the exception of the Provisional Government under Kerensky, were autocratic and willing to repress their opponents. This is clearly demonstrated by Nicholas II’s rigging of the elections for the 3rd and 4th Dumas. Lenin also suppressed democracy, closing down the constituent assembly in January 1918 after ‘one day of democracy’.
Pyotr (Peter) Stolypin Peter Stolypin, a controversially well known figure throughout the History of modern Russia, was known mainly for his inhumane and cruel methods in which he dealt with opponents. His agricultural reforms and involvement with the Romanov's Party contributed to his popularity. Stolypin assumed the position of Minister of the Interior and later Prime Minister. During this time he introduced various progressive military, education and finance policies, as his beliefs made him wane from the true definition of what was good for the people and social welfare. Historians have different views on him, some referring to him as the ‘Demon of Imperial Russia’, whilst others consider him to be the ‘Driving Force of Russian History’.
While Julius Caesar was dictator, he made a lot of notable changes to the empire. “One of the initial crises with which Caesar had to deal with was a lot ofdebt in Rome, especially after the Civil War when lenders demanded that their loans be repayed and the rest of the economy collapsed.” (Gelzer 94) Since Caesar was a creative thinker he improvised a way to get the economy up by making people repay their loans at the property’s “pre-war” value. This strategy would end up working and the economy went right back up to where it was supposed to be. Caesar put into place the construction of new public buildings which reduced the unemployment level and it boosted the economy. Caesar made many other improvements as dictator by making more jobs, boosting the economy, and helping out the poor and middle classes.
Many look to George Washington for the great things he accomplished in his lifetime. Winning the War for American Independence, being the first president, and shaping the way the Constitution was written and how the federal government was formed are all attributable to him. However, from his youth, he was a man who focused on the little details in his life predicted his behavior in large situations as they were presented to him. The mentality and experience he had from such a young age made him into the great leader he was. People who were under him as president must have enjoyed having a loyal educated president who knew what he was doing.
“Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future”. Born of Irish descent in May of 1917, Brookline Massachusetts native John F. Kennedy would eventually become the youngest man ever to be elected as President of the United States of America. He guided the nation through the early 1960s, handling conflicts with other nations and working to improve the lives of all Americans. He was not only one of the most well known presidents of the USA but was among the most influential people to ever live.
