My Family's Heirloom

My family possesses many artifacts, of which the oldest one is the harmonium. It is a musical instrument which consists of brass reeds (metal tongues that vibrate when air flows over them), a pumping apparatus, stops for drones (some models feature a stop that causes a form of vibrato), and a keyboard. Its original owner was my great-grandpa who was very good at playing it. It is very important to my family because it has been passed down from generation to generation and everyone in my family has learnt to play it. When I went to India at the age of 10, my relatives taught me to play it. When my great-grandpa owned it, it was very expensive. One day he had gone out of his house on a vacation and he returned to play his harmonium. When he picked it up to play, he realized that it was not playing at all. The whole family was upset that it had suddenly stopped working. When they took it to the repair shop, a harmonium expert found out that a rat had gotten into the harmonium and had chewed up some part. The harmonium is usually kept in a wooden box under the bed so it is easily accessible to any family member who wants to play it. When I play my harmonium, I think about my piano because the sound is almost the same and the instrument is made the same way except that it is smaller in size and is portable.
