The University of La Verne’s core values have been present in my life throughout the years. Even though my mother wanted to attend college as I did, she didn’t have the option to so and that’s why she encourages me to try my hardest in school. When my mother was young, she dreamed of attending college in the United States and getting a job so she could support her family, whereas when I was small, I didn’t think school was important. Although my mother only attended elementary school, school was one of her top priorities because she felt like it was an honor to go to school, and if you went to school, you were considered to be lucky. My mother was an over-achiever and saw education as a way of showing that she was better than most.
For many years I was scared to go to college because I thought I wasn’t college material. Hearing Capitan Mark Kelly speak about being an underachiever, and a “not so great” student really helped me see that light at the end of the tunnel. When final build up the courage with in myself, I enrolled into San Jacinto College. The only thing that stood in the way was that standardize test. I had to take the entry exam after five years of not being in school.
I graduated high school twenty-five years ago. Since then, I have raised a family and bounced from job to job. A college education is important to me because I have finally matured enough to complete my education and fulfill my dream of becoming a college graduate. In order to succeed in college, it takes dedication, discipline, and structure. Throughout my lifetime, I have always struggled with these.

As a freshman, I understood that the rigors of taking 18hrs credit hours of class work would be challenging. I thought I could handle the workload and I still believe that I could have, except that both my paternal grandfather and my maternal grandmother become very ill while I attended Richmond. As my parents first born child, I was extremely close to my grandparents. I became emotionally distraught concerning their conditions and it began to affect my ability to focus on my studies. I decided to go back to school for quite a few reasons. The main factors for my returning to school includes my family and stability also plays big role in my returning to school. My reasons for going back to school is to gain communication skills, become a good role model for my children, if I decide to have any, gain independence and seek profitable employment that would be profitable for me. My father has always been my support system in my return to school.
I had no trouble completing high school, taking most AP classes throughout my then short academic career. It seemed to me that I would simply coast through college as though it were nothing more that an extension of high school. I was sorely mistaken on that front, but what I was absolutely right about was how fun my new experience in college would be. When I was first asked this question, it intrigued me. I have always loved learning about everything and reading, so seeing people who have taken years off from school fathoms me. Because I love learning, I have always wanted to obtain my degree for personal development as well as having a higher education underneath my belt. I come from a low-income family, so they could not afford to send me to college when I graduated from high school. Besides my father, who passed away when I was young, if I complete my degree I would be the only one in my family to have a college degree.

Many have chosen to return to college to start or finish degrees that they gave up on years before when full employment was readily available. There are questions that one must ask when considering this option; like what’s the motivation for attending college online, what majors are offered and what do you hope to gain from attending college online , and how will an online college fit your lifestyle. Count me as one of the many that have chosen this path, I decided to return to college to finish my college degree I had abandoned thirty years earlier, via attending an online college.
Being a high school student who is supported by her parents, I found it very challenging to attempt to recreate the lifestyle of a low wage worker with a family to support. Although, I graduated college and am working towards a PhD, I found it difficult to find work in education. Teaching jobs are becoming tougher to find. I work for BELL (building educated leaders for life), which is an after school, and summer program to help kids who are struggling with their studies. I work specifically with a middle school in the Bronx.
