MY BEST FRIEND My Best Friend My best friend is a little boy named Roscoe; he was a rescue dog, and he changed my life in such a profound way. Rescue dogs are a better choice than a dog from a breeder as a companion for you and your family. By getting a dog from a rescue you are helping with overpopulation and at the same time getting rewarded. As a Best Friends Acclaimed Ambassador, Alyssa Milano said, “The fact that millions of loving, homeless pets die in shelters is a national disgrace” (personal communication, 2012). These dogs are often older and therefore have much of their training already completed. So now you just need to choose which dog would be best for you and your lifestyle. The one thing for sure that you will get from these dogs is their loyalty and love, because is most cases you have saved them from a very miserable life. By adopting a dog from a rescue you single handedly help with pet overpopulation. When you adopt there is a fee, however that money goes to spay/neuter the pet and to help with other rescue animals. That fee also helps with shelter and food for the rescued animals. Your money, when spent this way, goes a long way to help many animals vs. a purchasing fee, which only goes to the owner of the animal you have purchased. Breeders will continue to breed as long as people keep buying the dogs. According to the Humane Society of the United States, “Spay/neuter is a key component of any long term effort to reduce pet overpopulation”. (2012, p.1) They also say, “The Humane Society of the US estimates that animal shelters care for 6-8 million dogs and cats every year in the United States, of whom approximately 3-4 million are euthanized. At this time, there is no central data reporting agency for animal shelters, so these numbers are estimates; however, the Asilomar Accords method is gaining momentum as a standard
