Women and girls are being exploited every day in this world. Even though this has been around for centuries this epidemic has grown tremendously throughout the years. Media within our society constantly degrades women and sends negative messages about the way in which women should be treated. Music videos is one of the types of media were women are demoralized and are seen as sexual objects. Women in these music videos are becoming objectified in the sense that they are viewed as objects with little value. BET and MTV both show videos in which women are being portrayed disapprovingly. On November 10th, 2010 around 6pm I sat down and watched some music videos on BET. Since BET stands for Black Entertainment Television, mostly all of the videos are from African American artist. One of the videos I watched was by Lloyd a male R&B singer which was called “Lay it down”. Even though this video is not one of the most graphic videos, it does have a lot of hidden bias towards women. In the lyrics he is expressing to a woman that he met in a club how he loves her and that he would like her to lay her head down on his pillow. He is basically saying even though we just met he would love to take her home with him. Everyone in this video is either African American or Hispanic. The males are “popping bottles” meaning opening or pouring liquor for the women and the women are all surrounding them. The main woman of the video makes all of the sexual advances toward Lloyd. They are in a club setting but go off into a secluded area were the women seem in a constant state of arousal. While he is singing she is feeling all over him while he is undressing her. The message in this video too me is that if someone is making advances towards you in a club, that you should go home with them. If a man is buying you drinking, you should be all over him.
