Diseases of the Immune System Multiple Sclerosis Multiple Sclerosis is a disease in which the immune system attacks the myelin, which is a sheath that protects your nerves. This damage disrupts the communication between your brain and the rest of your body. Eventually the nerves themselves may deteriorate and this is currently irreversible. The cause of multiple sclerosis is unknown. It's believed to be an autoimmune disease, in which the body's immune system attacks its own tissues (mayoclinic.org). There is a fatty substance called myelin that protects the nerves in the brain and spinal cord. In multiple sclerosis the immune system attacks this fatty substance and exposes the nerves. In this process the damage to the nerves causes the brain and body communication to slow down. It isn't clear why MS develops in some people and not others. A combination of factors, ranging from genetics to childhood infections, may play a role. The signs and symptoms of multiple sclerosis vary depending on which nerves are affected. Some of the signs and symptoms are, numbness or weakness in one or more limbs, partial vision loss, double vision, tingling or pain in party of the body, electric shock sensations that occur with certain neck movements, tremor, lack of coordination or unsteady gait, slurred speech, fatigue, dizziness, an. d problems with bowel and bladder function (mayclinic.org). There is no cure for multiple sclerosis. Treatment typically focuses on speeding recovery from attacks, slowing the progression of the disease and managing symptoms.
