In my opinion, Singaporeans are gradually growing acceptance towards multi-ethnicity from only tolerance. It is true that Singaporeans have not fully accept multi-ethnicity, as mentioned in the article “1 in 2 Singapore residents do not have a close friend from another race”, “10 per cent of Malays and Indians said that they have been treated badly when using public services such as in hospitals, schools, social service agencies and in court”, and the government has to take actions such as implementing HDB Ethnic Integration policy to ensure a balanced ethnic mix which implies there is still lack of acceptance. However, many signs show that Singaporeans are not simply tolerating multi-ethnicity anymore. Some people believe that multi-ethnicity is more of tolerance than acceptance in Singapore, the view of which is biased. They address the incidences of people making negative comments. One example is the cases mentioned in the article “fighting tolerance with intolerance”, “former NTUC employee Amy Cheong followed in the footsteps of Shimun Lai and Jason Neo with a series of racist Facebook updates that attracted swift condemnation online”. Her behaviour does show lack of respect and understanding towards people from other races, however, she is only one of the very rare cases, not the majority. The majority rather show appreciation towards multi-ethnicity. As said in the article “1 in 2 Singapore residents do not have a close friend from another race”, the survey mentioned in it suggests that many respondents “agreed that having different races living in Singapore is a ‘good thing’”. Nevertheless, I concede that Singapore is still in the transitional period from tolerance to acceptance towards multi-ethnicity.
