The main character, Mariam, and her siblings and parents journey across the country to search for work only to be put in more danger than they would have been if they stayed at home. Mariam and her siblings meet some friends along the way which is about as much family as they'll ever have again, however, they are all ungratefully separated as the book goes on and the Turks try to win power over the Armenians.
