Castillo 2 Diversity in America not only presents a host of intimate snapshots of culture and heritage, but documents the struggles of nationalities to integrate into the “melting pot” society of America, and highlights the strength and integrity of various cultural leaders and thinkers.” http://www.worldandi.com/specialcollection/special-collection-diversity.asp. So if you don’t think that diversity in America is not very important think again because we are a country of diversity. That’s what makes America the way it is and that is the way it has always been. Even back to when America was being colonized there was diversity with Native Americans, Europeans, Mexicans, and Latin Americans. Another reason why American exceptionalism is viewed as good is because we have extremely good medical care here.
The action unfolding in the café helps the reader to evaluate the complex cultural tensions and fears of the post 9/11 world. By playing on the suspicion of the reader, Mohsin Hamid attempts to explore imbedded feelings toward both America and the Middle East post 9/11 through a reversal of the usual relationship, providing a muted American character, and an expressive Pakistani one. As soon as the novel begins we are presented with a product of Western prejudices “Do not be frightened of my beard, I am a lover of America” and as the character of Changez begins to introduce himself, we see the convention of the one dimensional Islamic man constructed by the American media slip away. Changez is articulate, polite, and as he reveals, exclusively educated, attending Princeton, and holding modern values “yes, the women, too- are working professionals”. Yet, the lack of information about the “purpose” and “mission” of these two characters takes grip of the narrative and through allusions “not unlike
Reading Response: Time to Reboot America By Thomas Friedman In the New York Times editorial, Time to Reboot America, Thomas Friedman explores the cause, the severity, and the solution for America’s financial crisis. To gain a deeper understanding of Friedman’s article, an in depth exploration through two different scopes is necessary. The first scope is observing the articles rhetorical context, and the second is evaluating how effective the employed arguments are. Thomas Friedman is known by many as an expert on modern business. He is a globally syndicated journalist for the New York Times, and is very involved in topics relating to the environment.
He grinned at her.” Line 10 He grinned at her with such love and attention. Despite such a serious story that Terri is telling a sense of mirth is felt in the tome and mood of Carver’s writing. Mel and Terri have a playful banter between the two of them an old love that has grown between the two of them. As the gin makes its rounds around the table and the limes follow so do the truths of each person’s views on love. As Mel’s story of Terri’s ex lover develops his speech and tone become more and more tense drawing in both Nick and Laura’s attention.
Also, rhetoric will be defined as the ability to speak and write effectively and to use language and oratory strategically. Despite the common employment of speech writers by most politicians, Senator Obama wrote the speech himself. By addressing the misunderstanding and miscommunication connected to and perpetrated by racism in America, the audience sees precisely how effective Obama’s speech is. Barack Obama’s speech echoes the rhetorical concepts of ethos, pathos, and logos that are explicitly discussed within Aristotle’s The Rhetoric. Ethos is how the speaker’s character and credibility aids his or her influence of the audience; whereas pathos is a rhetorical device that alters the 2 audience’s perceptions through storytelling and emotional appeals.
Zach Whetstone REL 300 Religion in America 3/05/12 Reflection Paper: AR Ch. 47 Ever since the last quarter, I have had a greater respect and curiosity about the Jewish culture. In REL204, I was floored at how important the Hebrew faith was to global evolution and how little they were understood or how misrepresented they were. The Jewish history is nothing short of amazing, and also nothing short of a struggle. I have to say this, on p 414, I had a good laugh.
Marina Giardi “Deaf Again” Essay December 4, 2012 The Book Deaf Again by Mark Drolsbaugh is a true inspiration to me personally. I have to admit when I heard I needed to read this book I wasn’t very happy about it, but after the first five pages I was completely hooked. Mark Drolsbaugh wrote this book in a very smart way. He wrote it to sound sophisticated but at the same time very understandable. He worded everything perfectly, with how he was a hearing child to becoming a hard of hearing and then deaf.
Hunter Benson Essay Benjamin Franklin is considered a uniquely American writer in terms of both style and content by using satirical phrases addressing the social issues of his time. His concepts and lessons were written with both humor and plain language, so that even the most “common man” could understand. Franklin had the ability to provide the reader with an important lesson while using ridicule to expose truth. These forms of writing can be seen in three of his most known literary works; The Way to Wealth, A Witch Trial at Mount Holly, and The Speech of Polly Baker. In 1758, Ben Franklin summarized his own work, Poor Richard’s Almanac, in The Way to Wealth.
A Traveler from Altruria Book Analysis The novel A Traveler From Altruria written by W. D. Howells incorporates many of the main ideas that were present in America during the 1890's as well as some that are still around today. W. D. Howells does a great job portraying these ideas, morals and values through four characters that the Altrurian visits with on a few occasions. These characters, the lawyer, the minister, the novelist and the professor. Through these characters he illustrates exactly what is wrong with American society and the general views involved with these problems. He shows that most of these people don't focus on how things in America should be they just deal with them how they are.
So many writers created literature that changed people’s ways of living, or allowed them to see ideologies through these different lenses. Many writers either recorded what they saw in 19th century America, or they went past simple observations and shared their own opinions on what was happening and what needed to happen involving the progress of the United States. An analysis of four very unique pieces of literature and art show not just culture, but diversity of the views on progress during the 19th century. An American historian, Frederick Jackson Turner had a great effect on the existence of land through his speech Significance of the Frontier in American History. Turner describes the greatest opportunity for progress in America through the frontier.
