Girl Interrupted is about the story of a nineteen year old girl during the 1960's named Susanna who, after a suicide attempt, gets admitted into a psychiatric institution (Claymore) and is diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. During her stay at the Claymore Hospital, Susanna quickly becomes familiar to a number of the institution's residents. These residents included Georgina, a pathological liar, Polly, a terminally fearful burn victim, Daisy, an incest victim and extremely withdrawn agoraphobic and Lisa, a charming, but manipulating sociopath. The focus of this paper will be the symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment that Susanna experiences throughout the film. Borderline personality disorder is characterized by extreme shifts in mood lasting only a few hours at a time. This is frequently coupled with bouts of intense aggression, substance abuse, and self-destructive behaviors such as cutting, casual sex or binge eating. Individuals with borderline personality disorder will sometimes attempt suicide impulsively during periods of severe depression or anger. Often time’s people with borderline personality disorder feel extremely jaded, vacant, mistreated and/or alone. Intense feelings of loneliness are typically followed by frantic efforts to avoid being alone. Susanna is originally institutionalized for taking a bottle of aspirin with a bottle of vodka. She claims that she was not trying to kill herself, but only trying to get rid of a headache. While in the hospital she had severe bruises on her hands and claimed that she had no bones in her hand. People with borderline personality disorder often have suicide attempts and substance abuse in their history along with self-mutilation. Susanna’s statement of not having any bones in her hand might suggest a delusional disorder or a direct result of her intoxification and does not necessarily fall in line with
