AUSTRALIA- ANALYSIS The movie Australia, starring Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman, was, released on November 18th 2008 in Australia. Australian director Baz Luhrmann directed the film and Australia does shows lots of similarities with Buhrmann’s other films when it comes to casting and staffing. This is now his second movie starring Nicole Kidman and his second time working with costumer director Katherine Martin. Obviously it is a studio film and was produced by FOX. The film covers a variety of different themes however it is considered a Historical War genre film with a sub genre of an epic romance and family. In a nutshell, the film, set in northern Australia during world war 2, is about an English aristocrat who travels from England to Australia thinking she is going to catch her husband cheating on her. Instead she finds him dead and inherits a sprawling ranch. Sarah meets and befriends Nullah a half cast little aboriginal boy, who tells her that Neil Fletcher is stealing her cattle; has killed her husband; and is working for the cattle king, King Carney. Sarah fires Fletcher and his men and with the help of the Drover, Nullah and a group of faithful employees, they ride together to take the cattle to supply the army Along the way, they fall madly and deeply head over heels in love with each other and form their own happy family with Nullah, whose mother sadly passed on. Their happy ever after ending is cut short however, when the drover leaves for a 6 month drove and nullah is sent to mission island, an island where half cast children are sent to phase out their culture. To make matters worse, they then experience the bombing of Darwin, Australia, by Japanese forces firsthand, leaving our three protagonists’ to assume that their new family has been killed.
