Movement of people create connections between people, places and institutions. The term migrant according to the Office for National Statistics is someone who changes his or her residence for a period of at least a year and the country of destination becomes the usual residence. (Raghurham, 2009) In this essay the term migrant is referred to those who move internally within a country as well as international migrants who move between countries. An example of internal migration is the retired people of Britain moving to Wales (Raghurham, 2009). International migration is people’s movement across countries or continents. For the purpose of this essay it will focus on the movement of people around the UK borders both internally and internationally. The essay describes the connection between the movement of people and the places they pass through or reside in. The essay also deals with connections with institutions within the UK and why the movement of migrants help make the UK institutions what they are today. The essays three main point’s people, places and institutions will be broken down further to evaluate and explain what is meant by each point, describing the connections and disconnections the movement of people create. Connections between the movements of people are created with people migrating internally within a country and internationally across the globe. If anyone asks themselves who they are and where they are from, most people will first identify them as being from a town, city or village. On a larger scale people will then identify themselves as being from a country. Within the country such as the UK they may identify themselves as being Welsh, British or Scottish.
