Rainsford chased by General Zaroff, using his experience and wits to cunningly escape from the hunter and even wounding him with traps. He eventually kills Zaroff as a result; Rainsford becomes the most dangerous game on Zaroff’s island. “The Most Dangerous Game” Critique Essay In Richard Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game”, Rainsford is an experienced hunter who is going to learn the reality of knowing what it is like to be hunted, after years of being the hunter. General Zaroff moved to an island to create a new game to hunt, he believes that he has hunted and taken down every animal that there is to hunt and know he wants something the will provide a spark for him, keep him interested in the hunt. While Rainsford and his hunting buddy decide to take a hunting exploration trip on a boat the two encounter in a conversation where Rainsford says that he does not think that the animals feel that they are being hunted, he believes that they are just animals. Later that night Rainsford is on the ship and loses his balance then goes overboard on the ship leaving him no other option but to swim to ‘Ship Trap Island’ where he realizes that General Zaroff lives on the island and hunts his new kind of game on the island. While eating dinner together the first night of Rainsford being on the island he is asked by Zaroff to join him in his new hunt.

Based on Rainsford’s actions, thoughts, and the reaction of other characters, it is clear that he is an experienced hunter. First of all, Rainsford is very adventurous .In the beginning of the story. Rainsford and his friend Whitney are on a yacht that is sailing to the Amazon.They are planning to hunt jaguars as soon as they arrive, but then Rainsford falls overboard and they never reach their destination.This shows that Rainsford is willing to take on new challenges. Rainsford is also curious to find his location once he reached Ship Trap Island.Although he did not have much of a choice, he still wants and needs to figure out where he is .In addition, Zaroff states that he has read Rainsford’s book about hunting snow leopards in Tibet (pg.4). Exploring a strange location, hunting snow leopards a foreign country, and sailing to the Amazon to hunt jaguars easily shows Rainsford’s outgoing and adventurous personality.
From Neville’s point of view, he was doing what he thought was right. He couldn't lie down and let the vampires run over him, he was just defending himself. He had no idea he was killing some sentient beings (Hybrids). They didn't exactly help, constantly attacking his home and taunting him. He also thought he had to fight to survive but at the same time he had not idea what was going to happen.
Prince Humperdinck tries to make himself seem like a brave hunter, but as the story goes on the reader begins to question the validity of this statement. He is deceiving, greedy, and dishonest. He is extremely afraid of being called a coward. Even though he is a talented hunter, he uses his training for his own good.
