INTRODUCTION TO LINGUISTICS (ENGL-203) MORPHOLGY OBJECTIVES: * To know what morphology is. * To differentiate words to morphemes * To gain knowledge in the word formation process TIME ALLOTED: 3 hours (August 22 and August 28, 2014) MATERIAL/S: Visual Aid, Chart LESSON PROPER: #MORPHOLOGY The term morphology is Greek and is a makeup of morph- meaning 'shape, form', and -ology which means 'the study of something'. Morphology as a sub-discipline of linguistics, was named for the first time in 1859 by the German linguist August Schleicher who used the term for the study of the form and structures of words. Meaning to say, Morphology s the level of linguistic study concerned with the internal structure of words and rules of word formation. *DIFFERENTIATE WORD TO MORPHEMES… WORD- they are the smallest independent units of language. They are independent in that they do not depend on other words which mean that they can be separated from other units and can change position. MORPHEMES- The smallest unit which has a meaning or grammatical functions that word can be broken down into. ALLOMORPH- variant of a morpheme. Consider the word kindness, can you tell me if it is a Word or a morpheme? The answer is both. The word Houses will undergo morphemic analysis. Kind = is a word while -ness = is a bound morpheme. *COMPLEX vs. SIMPLE WORDS.. complex word: a word consisting of two or more simple words: a word consisting of only one morpheme, e.g. work Simple Activity: She enjoys singing in front of everyone. (10 morphemes) *TYPES OF MORPHEMES We need first to classify words into “content words” and “function words”. * Content Words, are the nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs that constitute the major part of the vocabulary.
