Monica Ashley Case a. Why is this such a political organization? How are the changes in the environment relevant? HEALINC in an organization where there are lot of differences in the goals and values amongst different departments. Regular conflicts and disagreements have been seen in the meetings and there is no integrator to resolve these conflicts. Intergroup conflicts have been common due to goals incompatibility and task interdependence. For instance, Ralph Parker from Signal Processor Design team thinks there is no need for any digital signal processors or any strategic alliance with other companies for purchase of components whereas Dan Stella and Monica from Manufacture and Design team thinks otherwise. Power and influence is used each time to reach decisions. Hence it is a political organization. The company encourages initiatives and new inventions. In early stages, it provided maximum freedom to its employees to explore creativity. However, with the growing external competition and market demands, there is a recent need to address the customer demands. Competitor companies are forming strategic alliances with vendor companies to purchase components for the equipment’s. Internal resistance to change in some of the departments is causing intergroup conflicts. All this is making a high uncertainty environment in this company. b. Analyze the sources of power available to Monica and those that she lacked. How did Monica’s power compare to Parker’s? Being an ambitious program manager of Project Hippocrates, Monica had formal position power in the organization. She was appointed as the Program Manager by the CEO Gary Dorr who also gave her the legitimate authority to head this project. She used company’s resources in order to accomplish her goals for this project. She has extensive information on customer’s needs, environmental changes as well as Taguchi
