Modern or Not? Poems are one way to connect the past to our present. They are a piece of writing that partakes of the nature of speech, song, and that are usually rhythmical and metaphorical. Poetry is one’s own philosophy towards a matter or experience that the author endured. Poetry insights into the mind of them. One can think of it like this. It is a matter of philosophies and different perspectives towards life, feelings, and motives that the author feels. This is where Robert Browning and Gabriel Spera come in. Their poems “My Last Duchess” and “My Ex-husband” are two pieces written in different time periods, but are said to be similar in a way. Spera’s “My Ex-husband” is the “modern” version of Browning’s “My Last Duchess” because of its showing to understand, explain, and describe the justice from each other. "My Last Duchess" is about a Duke and his flirtatious wife who has two different personalities. One that was reality and the other was the woman in the painting. “My Ex-husband” is also about a woman and her flirtatious ex-husband. Both poem begins and ends with the Duke and the woman mourning the loss of his deceased Duchess and her divorced husband, but from the way that the Duke and the woman speaks, he and she knows more about her death and his divorce than they leads us to believe. The Duke chooses his word very carefully, when he talks to his friend about the painting of his wife. He only drops small hints to his friend about the death of his Duchess. That leads us to believe that the Duke killed his wife, or had someone to put her to her death. The woman finds the strength to stand up for herself and her beliefs when faced with a cheating spouse. As the Duke speaks of his Duchess, in the beginning, he sounds compassionate and caring towards her. The Duke had an absolute love for his Duchess as most husbands and wives do.
