Minor characters include Mr. and Mrs. Dalton, Mary's parents; Jan Erlone boyfriend of Mary; Bessie Mears, Bigger's girlfriend; Mrs. Thomas, Bigger's Mother; Buddy Thomas, Bigger's younger brother; Vera Thomas, Bigger's younger sister; G.H., Gus and Jack, Bigger's cohorts; Mr. Blum, a white shopkeeper; Britten a Private Investigator; Buckley the State Attorney, (Prosector); Peggy a white employee of the Dalton's. Mr. Wright has quite the statement to make in his 3 book Novel Native Son which is full of symbolism as well. Let me begin by telling you about the conditions of 1930's Chicaco's South Side (explaining “red lining” as well) then an in depth look into each Major and Minor character. The Southside of Chicago was a large ghetto that was racial mix of a minority of poor to middle class white business owners and a majority of black poor and working class of black Americans. In this section of Chicago in 1930's a housing shortage was created by “red-lining” a practice created and enforced by banks and real estate mogul's which restricted the areas in which non-whites could live.
In Jhumpa Lahiri’s novel, Interpreter of Maladies, we are exposed to a mix of stories and a huge variety of characters. The book shows us the difficulties of Indian immigrants in their daily lives. In the first story, Sexy, we see an Indian man named Dev, who is married, involved in a relationship with a tall, pretty American lady named Miranda. The main obstacle that blocks Dev from succeeding in continuing his relationship with Miranda is his attitude towards the relationship. In the next story, A Temporary Matter, we see a man named Shukamar who tries to patch things up with his wife after their newborn son dies at birth.
To prove this point I decided to compare two events: reality TV star Kim Kardashian’s 72-day marriage (“fark”) and the first of the three recent presidential debates between Governor Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama (prevalent “news.”) I asked 25 people of both sexes in grades 11 and 12, ages 16 to 18, questions relating to both events to see which topic the majority of teenagers are more interested in. Kim Kardashian is the epitome of an American celebrity. She has become an American cultural icon through her reality TV show, Keeping Up with the Kardashians, which follows her family and their ridiculous daily routines. Miss Kardashian began dating a professional basketball player named Kris Humphries (all 6 ft. 9 inches and 235 lbs. of him) for 6 months when, before a multitude of TV cameras and a nation-wide audience, he proposed by presenting to the bride to be a 20.5-carat diamond ring.
The Five-Year Engagement (Universal Pictures) 2 hrs. 4 mins. Starring: Emily Blunt, Jason Segel, Chris Pratt, Alison Brie, Mimi Kennedy, Lauren Weedman, Chris Parnell, Mindy Kaling, Brian Posehn Directed by: Nicholas Stoller MPAA Rating: R Genre: Romantic comedy Critic’s Rating: ** stars (out of 4 stars) There seems to be the continual explosion of Hollywood romantic comedies surging on the scene that specifically devotes itself to the trappings of marital bliss. Last year’s heralded Bridesmaids lit a fire under the “wacky wedding woes” genre so naturally Tinsel Town wants to further fan the flames in hopes sharing the wealth with the marriage mayhem theme. Let’s not kid ourselves though…we were long bombarded by rom-com wedding-oriented chucklers that ranged from Meet the Parents to The Wedding Date to The Wedding Planner.

The film The Kids are Alright is based on the lives of a lesbian family who’s two kids were born by the sperm of there sperm donor one in each mother. The movies conflict in the film arises when the boy now 15 (Laser) convinces his sister (Joni) who’s now 18 to make a call to meet there sperm donor. The film examines the changes in the nuclear family; how it is the same as the original version, but also different. It also discusses gender roles and how they are manipulated in modern society. The film also depicts how a queer family can function in the same way as a normal heterosexual family.
Riley Rung Comms100 12/09/13 Media Analysis I chose the tv show, Modern Family. In the show there are 3 families. One family is the the "ideal" family, with a mom, dad, and 3 kids. Another family the show promotes is a gay family, two men with a daughter. And the last family is an elder man who is married to a very young latino woman and they have a child together.
Each family has their own way of life and perception of what’s right and what’s wrong. One of the families is a gay couple with a six years old daughter, which shows a real situation that America is going through right now. There is also a straight couple with three kids and a multicultural couple with two kids. Gloria, the housewife of the multicultural family, is from a little town in Colombia. She is married to an American man who is older.
