It takes courage to go out in front of people and do something you know you won't succeed in right away. Homer Hickam had so much courage to try and fail again and again. That's what made him prevail in the end, when he won the scholarship. He also had courage when he stood up to his father, and when he said he didn't want to work in the mine. Homer knew that his father, John would get angry with him if he stood up to him, but he still had the courage to do that.
It's knowing you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do. "(116) Atticus is stating that courage is not a man with a gun but someone who is inclined to fight for something even if they have a low chance of victory. This can be compared to the Tom Robinson case Atticus is fighting for, though the chances of him succeeding is shallow, he continues along the path of trying to gain his triumph. Also, Atticus standing up for black people in a very racial locality requires a great amount of courage.
He demonstrates his courage by taking on the case of Tom Robinson knowing that he was defeated before he began. He was also putting himself and his children in danger but he did, as it was the right thing to do. He was courageous when he shot the rabid dog when the sheriff could not. Also, when he heard of the mob coming for Tom, he went to the jailhouse to protect him knowing he could be killed or beaten as a result. Atticus Finch stood up for what he believed was right no matter the consequences.

Atticus Finch, the principal character of the novel, becomes a fighter for justice and truth.
