Modern Day Beatitudes During the “Sermon on the Mount” Jesus distributed among his followers little pearls of wisdom known as the Beatitudes. Once strung together, the Beatitudes become a magnificent exemplar on how to live a life in accordance to the teachings of Jesus. The attitudes that one may adopt from these teachings may change one’s character, and help foster their spiritual self, even as they are faced with the materialistic beliefs that cloud one’s true being. By following these guidelines of living, one may truly experience the harmony of Heaven on Earth. The first Beatitude is is the root from which all other Beatitudes grow. Once one gains understanding of this Beatitude, the rest will become clear. “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven.” To be poor means to have literally nothing. It means that one becomes a beggar, and are completely and utterly destitute. Poverty is a lack of the essential needs in one’s life. Likewise, being poor in spirit is when someone recognizes that they are spiritually incompetent and are in constant need of help. Those who recognize that they are in need, will do what they must to satisfy this need, much like how when one is thirsty they will find water to drink. If one is poor in spirit, they will be able to understand and live out the rest of the Beatitudes by humbling themselves. People today, long to be self-sufficient and only want to rely on themselves for everything that they need. Some people even have bumper stickers that read “born right the first time”. The greatest problem here is that humans think that they may exist without the presence of God in their lives. It is this pride that is completely contrasting to the qualifications necessary for admittance into Heaven. Self-confident pride is a value prominent in today’s culture.
