Alison Everidge Eth/125 September 29, 2011 Teresa Edge Checkpoint: Modern Challenges in Immigration I am a European (Irish) immigrant, wanting to apply for Naturalization. First naturalization means when a person NOT born in the United States voluntarily becomes a citizen. When applying for Naturalization there are requirements you need to meet. Nine of them according to the USCIS. * Be at least 18 years old at the time of filing out the N-400 application of Naturalization. * Be a permanent resident (have a “green card”) for at least 5 years. * Live within the state of the USCIS district jurisdiction over place of residence for at least 3 months prior to the date filing form N-400 * Be able to read, write, and speak Basic English. * Have continuous residence in the U.S. as a lawful permanent resident for at least 5 years immediately preceding the date of filing form N-400. * Be physically present in the U.S. for at least 30 months out of the 5 years immediately preceding the date of filing N-400. * Have basic understanding of U.S. history and government (civics). * Be a person of good moral character. * Demonstrate an attachment of principles and ideas of the U.S. Constitution.
