Safety Features of the Modern Car Cars are filled with safety features that manufacturers have incorporated in the past few years. But how do they work and what is their purpose? We find out… The car is a great invention. Undoubtedly, one of the world’s best creations. In fact, they’re such a big part of people’s life’s that it is difficult to imagine a world without them. There is a staggering amount of cars in the UK, with over 30 million of these 4 wheeled machines on Britain’s roads. But, as we all know, cars don’t come without risk. When you have thousands of cars hurtling along the motorway at seventy miles per hour something is bound to happen. And that’s why cars are made as safe as possible by having state of the art technology in them. The first main safety feature is the airbag. They are designed to protect your neck, chest and head areas. When the crash sensor in a car detects a collision, the control module deploys the airbag after receiving a signal. A bag made of thin nylon fabric rapidly inflates to cushion the passenger. The gas released into the bag then escapes after a second to allow the person to move. All moving objects have momentum, and unless there is an outside force the object will continue moving at whatever speed the car was traveling at. This where the airbag comes in- its aim is to slow the person down to zero with as little damage as possible. Next is the thing that most people will associate with a car’s safety features; the seatbelt. Invented by George Caley in the 1800s, they reduce the risk of death for a front seat passenger by 50%, and are estimated to save over 2200 loves in Britain a year. Yet all that it is a simple piece of fabric. The basic concept is simple- it stops you being catapulted through your windscreen/the chair in front of you when your car comes to a sudden halt.
