In “Model of Christian Charity”, John Winthrop describes how the people on the ship are Christians and as such must love one another. He says that with God’s special guidance over them, they will form a civil and religious society in a way that individual conduct benefit the good of the colony. He says that they need to apply these principles to the society they are forming. They must surpass their lives in England and take it to the New World. Winthrop states that since they are the chosen people, God will not be forgiving big errors. If the Puritans forsake their mission to create a truly godly society they will suffer the wrath. They are to be good Christians if they are to gain the promise land. Winthrop wanted to establish a theocracy. He hoped his colony would serve as a model for all other societies. He wanted the society to be a very tight knit community, always keeping God at the center. Everyone should “rejoice together, mourn together, labor and suffer together,” to keep the unity of the spirit in the bond of peace. He didn’t want religious faith forced on anyone, but for it to happen naturally by the hope and faith of the people themselves.
