Alyssa Fortier Mrs. Evans English Honors 2 MOD SUN Derek Smith was born on March 10, 1987 in Bloomington, Minnesota in the back seat of a greyhound bus. Growing up as a happy kid, Derek was always a musically inclined. According to Derek, his parents were "hippies". At a young age, his parents divorced, and Smith was raised between Bloomington with his mother and Long Beach, California with his father. He played in bands all throughout his childhood, such as “The Semester”, “New Found Glory”, and “The Used”. These bands were known as post hardcore rock, but Derek eventually shifted his interest to hip hop. At age 18, he changed his name to Dylan Smith. He began touring nationally at the ripe age of 17, and by age 21, had toured worldwide. Playing drums for four successful bands, one being “Four Letter Lie”; he emancipated himself from FLL on July 4, 2009 to become his own solo musician. With this, he changed his name once more to his alias, MOD SUN. His stage name supports his message that he wishes to portray in his music; MOD SUN stands for “Movement On Dreams Stands Under None”. Mod’s message to his listeners is clear in his lyrics – be happy at all times! He uses his music to spread positivity and fun. Mod Sun calls his genre of music "hippy hop". He describes it as a combination of hip hop music with hippie culture. Mod Sun’s music is upbeat and playful, but there is always a lesson to be learned from each song. One of my favorites is “Lightning In A Bottle” from the album “Blazed by the Bell” which talks about saving people’s lives through his music. A girl wrote him a letter one day, telling him that one of his songs saved her life. It goes on to say how that is more precious than any award that could be won or any amount of money that could be given.
