Mason Tompkins Dr. J. H. Jones EH 104 January 21, 2015 Outline ❏ The story focuses on Miss Brill, and her weekly day at the park ❏ Miss Brill has heart problems, possibly an elderly woman ❏ “She felt a tingling in her hands and arms, but that came from walking, she supposed. And when she breathed, something light and sad - no, not sad, exactly - something gentle seemed to move in her bosom.” ❏ Miss Brill is either a widow or never married ❏ Miss Brill must be shy ❏ This was disappointing, for Miss Brill always looked forward to the conversation. She had become really quite expert, she thought, at listening as though she didn't listen, at sitting in other people's lives just for a minute while they talked round her. ❏ Miss Brill doesn’t
Even she had a part and came every Sunday.”(9) She even enjoyed of being an invisible person by eavesdropping in other’s lives. “She had become really quite expert, she thought, at listening as though she didn’t listen, at sitting in other people’s lives just for a minute while they talked round her.”(3) However, because of her present at the park, the girl refused her boyfriend’s inappropriate request, the girl’s reaction made the boy angry at Miss Brill. At that moment, the young people made some rude remarks towards Miss Brill. These remarks changed her life at this early fall sunny afternoon. “It’s her fur-ur which is so funny,” giggled the girl.
Curley’s wife is very lonely so she has to make her rounds at the farm to not be as lonely as possible. John Steinbeck has some of the loneliest people in the novella Of Mice and Men. If Curley’s wife only had another woman to talk to at the farm or a new husband everyone has a better
When I asked Stephanie what favorite leisure time activities are, she said that she enjoys traveling, dancing, reading, participating in walk a thons, and spending time with family and friends. Stephanie has no children and has never been married so she enjoys traveling to different places worldwide. She said that one of her favorite places she has visited is Costa Rica. She loves the culture and the climate. She states that now that she is older, she still tries her best to take care of her body by going to the gym 2-3 times a week but this activity takes more out of her than before.
This places the listener in the personality of the music. This song would be played in a movie portraying an independent woman spending her day having fun and enjoying life. A man is slightly introduced, only long enough for her satisfaction, then she jumps back behind her wall of fun. She never commits, just enjoys the music. Her life is enjoyable and carefree without assistance from anyone or anything but fun.
During the novel Curley’s wife is often found wondering around the farm “looking for Curley”. Many of the guys on the farm think that she is looking for attention. They also think that she is a “tart.” Mean while all that Curley’s wife is trying to do is make some friends so that she is not alone on the farm. This shows how Curley’s wife is an example of how women were restless during this time period because they had not much to do, and most of the time they were alone. Curley is also very protective of his wife.
She lived moment to moment without any thought of consequences. She pursued pleasure with a passion and loved music and the company of boys. “Oates points out…Connie spends her summer ‘thinking, dreaming of the boys she met’ (p. 38).” (Connie’s Tambourine Man: A New Reading of Arnold Friend p. 221) “…Connie’s problem is that she has no sexual fear, uncertainty, or guilt, not even in repressed form. There is nothing psychologically complex about her. She is simply a pathetic teen-ager who isn’t being raised very well.
By comparison technique, these two characters would be best comprehended through their worlds, their meaning of lives, and their characteristics. Despite the difference in races, Miss Brill and Phoenix Jackson both are the victims of discrimination in their worlds. Miss Brill is a lonely English woman in a small French town. She has a habit of going to Jardins Publiques every Sunday. She loves the music, the conversations there.
Gender inequality was normal during the time this story was written. John Steinbeck did an excellent job with the character Elisa Allen. He showed how women were not treated equally and revealed Elisa’s emotional toll on the situation. Although Elisa’s interaction with the tinker was quite exciting and made her feel like a woman again, it had no effect on her in the long run to change her current situation. Elisa did however, got dolled up for her husband in the
Curley’s wife is definitely not evil. Being lonely, not respected and carrying around an unfulfilled dream takes a toll on her life. Being lonely can often have a positive and negative effect on a person’s life. Although Curley’s wife sometimes may corrupt a situation, she is not evil. Curley’s wife explained to Lennie about being lonely and how difficult it is on her.
