“In ‘The Bloody Chamber’, Carter is excessively obsessed with violent instincts” How far do you agree with this view?

The idea of violence provokes the imagery of blood and possibly thoughts of death and things that lead up to death. Carter uses plenty of symbolism in the story to suggest bloodiness and decapitation mainly with the use of the colour red. Items such as the red ruby choker and red ribbon could be seen as a foreshadowing to the Marquis’ true desire to kill the heroin. Excessive can mean over the top and extreme and the title ‘The Bloody Chamber’ implies excessive violence and blood however whether Carter is obsessed with the implications of violence is dependent on how necessary the occurrences of it are to the story.
The Marquis’ gifts to the heroine could be seen as highly symbolic of blood and violence suggesting the depths of his control over her and also a foreshadowing of his plans to later on kill her. Crimson is also the colour produced by the dried bodies of Kermes insects which links in with thoughts of decomposing bodies therefore the mention of this violent instinct can again foreshadow the Marquis’ plans and the heroine’s discovery when she enters the chamber. On the other hand, leather is usually known as a durable, strong and long lasting material that can become wrinkled over time whilst velvet is thought of as delicate (as soft as velvet) so although the Marquis’ face had ‘not been lined by experience’ he is much older than the heroine and it could be suggested that the leather box is representative of him and the young heroine is represented by the soft velvet;...
