Misperceptions and Misunderstanding of Islam in western Countries and societies, specifically in the United States of America Nedim Kapic Introduction: Ever since the tragic and horrific events of 9/11 , the global image of Islam has been altered negatively. While it is true that misperceptions are present all over the globe, they mainly occur in western civilization and western societies. This study will therefore, focus on the United States of America and the problems and misunderstanding Muslims living there have to encounter in their daily lives. The central question I want to cover is where this misunderstanding comes from , how it affects Muslims and what we can do to educate and inform people to show what Islam really is about. Too often is it that we see images of radical Islamic organizations or images of woman with seemingly no rights. Who is to blame? Is it the media? Politics , or even Islam itself? Since the end of the Cold War, much media attention has focused on Islam as a disruption in the global order. Although Islam is the fastest growing religion in the West, the West has many stereotypes and misconceptions about Islam that are due to the media, prejudice, and ignorance. Islam is often looked upon as a "extremist", "terrorist", or "fundamental" religion. In contrast to what many Westerners think of Islam, Islam is a peaceful religion, which does not promote any forms of uncalled violence or "terrorist" actions. My research will concentrate of the numerous issues Muslims living in America have to deal with and also which misunderstandings and misperceptions Muslims encounter in general . I will study books and articles about this field of research as well as try to link it to the local community of St. Johnsbury and its academy. This will be done in form of surveys and interviews that I will complete. These surveys will center
