That is a high rise in a short period of time. Right now, we are headed to what they call a “Second Great Depression.” Millions of people are losing jobs and homes and are barely getting by each day. This years elections is a big one, America needs to elect a president that will get us out of this crisis and back on the right path. This leads me to the question, “After I graduate high school, will I be able to earn a living on a minimum wage salary?” The answer is simply no. Raising the Minimum Wage By: Driscoll, Sally and Grant Richard A The minimum wage in the United States is always debated in nearly every congressional sessions with often no resolution. In 2007, the federal minimum wage was raised to $5.85 an hour. The minimum wage hasn’t been increased since 1997. Within the 10 years that have passed between 1997-2007, the cost of goods had increased nearly to 23%, while housing and education increased even more. There was a bill passed by the United State Senate which increased the minimum wage to $7.25 in 2009.
We want to enjoy being young. G.E Miller of 20 something finance states, “At least 134 countries have laws setting the maximum length of the work week; the U.S. does not”. It seems that’s business in the United States are trying to milk their workers for every last penny. It doesn’t seem too beneficial to work and live in the United States at this point. Not only do Americans work more hours but also they get the least amount of vacation.
As a result, today there are minimum wage laws in the legislation of over 90% of all countries. Although, despite this high adoption rate, there is still much debate on whether the minimum wage law is effective in bringing the poor out of poverty, which was it’s original purpose. The premise behind minimum wage legislation issued by government is that by doing so, they are able to increase the earning power of all marginal workers. Embedded in this notion is the assumption that a business’ main goal is to generate the most profit possible, so no business owner will never voluntarily increase the pay of their workers. In order to counter this, government issues a minimum amount in which a business is allowed to pay their employees.
Jamila Aldrich Sociology 101 Debate: Should the U.S. government raise the minimum wage? Think back to the time when you were a child. When your parents first started teaching you the importance of understanding the true value of a dollar. Perhaps an allowance was given to you every week with the knowledge and understanding that you would earn it upon the completion of the assigned weekly chore. As you got older you eventually started wanting more money to purchase the things you wanted.
With the rising tuition education is going to be very hard to acquire. So it is time for America to change and find a way to lower these ridiculous prices. A College Board report found that about 66% of students who earned a bachelor's degree in 2008 graduated with a substantial amount of debt. This proves that the cost of tuition is rising and in another report, it determined that the average debt of the class of 2008 owed $23,200. This was determined by the Project on student debt, a non profit organization.
Then I finally got a job as the receptionist. I was told I had to train the worker with the degree and my college degree employee earned more than me all because they had something that I was lacking, a degree. According to Hardy, (2014) A person who has a high school diploma only earns about $28,000 a year in 2008 where as a college graduate earns about $52,000 a year. A high school diploma gets you an entry level job but a college education gives you a career. You are considered a professional if you have that degree.
The hiring of part time workers was a strategy used by UPS to keep down labor cost. Young adults were eager for the opportunity to work off hour shifts earning union wages and benefits. The high number of part time jobs and low number of full time positions there was little opportunity for job advancement. Wages could be kept low because of the high demand among young adults for this type of work.
