Mineral and Water Function The two main functions that minerals supply in our body are; to build body structures and help bodily functions. “Building functions affect the bones and all soft tissues. Regulating functions affect metabolism, heartbeat, blood clotting, water balance, blood pressure, nerves, oxygen transport and energy release” (Rubin 2000). The two different types of minerals are: “macro minerals” aka major minerals and “micro minerals” aka trace minerals (Rubin, 2000). Macro minerals are required in large amounts in order to keep the body functioning. These are the major minerals that require a high daily dosage. Micro minerals are trace minerals that are equally important to our body but, only need less than a teaspoon in our bodies (Rubin, 2000). The best sources of minerals are found in fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and all of the green leafy vegetables and also red meat (Rubin, 2000). Coconut water has been found to be an excellent source of minerals that our body needs. Coconut water contains vitamins, minerals and enzymes. Some of the professional sports teams have replaced commercial sports drinks with coconut water to rehydrate athletics (Fife, 2010).
