SEXUAL ASSAULT IN THE MILLITARY DEFINING THE PROBLEM The military environment is not an easy place to live in accordance with social norms. It is understandable that the intensity and the pressure of the war are so powerful that it affects soldier’s behavior and their actions are out of the line sometimes. However, a line is crossed when this behavior become a type of abuse toward fellow soldiers. According to the Pentagon report “Sexual Assault In The Military up Dramatically”, the amount of sexual assault in the Army not only has increased but also has been disregarded or has not been taken care of by officials. The rate of violent sexual crime has increased 64 percent since 2006 according to US Army report, which noted that “rape, sexual sodomy were the most frequent violent sex crimes committed in 2011” (Pentagon Report: Sexual Assault in the Military up Dramatically). According to the Department of Defense 2009 fiscal year, 3230 women and men reported sexual assault. They also admit that 80% of sexual assault survivors do not report the crime (The Invisible War). It is an extraordinary number if we try to do the math and find out how many people that have been victim of sexual assault in the military. In 1991 Congress reported that 200,000 women soldiers were victims of sexual assault so far in the US Army. Even though women are more commonly victims of sexual assault, men are also victims. An act of sexual assault is a crime and should be dealt with properly. These statistics and reports show the scale of the phenomenon that is happening in the military. This issue has been going on for decades but no formal severe actions have been taken until now. This issue has been underestimated because most victims do not report and most cases of the reports has been unfairly handled by the officials. NON FOR PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS RESPONSE The non-profit
