Armed forces are said to be loyal, dutiful, and full of integrity but when you unravel the truth they are sometimes the opposite. “An annual Pentagon study released recently estimated that unwanted sexual contact, from groping to rape, jumped by 37 percent in 2012 to 26,000 cases from 19,000 the previous year” (Reuters). Since some soldiers have high authority and rank, they tend to abuse their rights and think it is acceptable to sexually harass women in the military. This could continue if cases are not brought to justice that stop the abuse. Behind the scenes of the military, Armed forces are failing to deal with sexual assault in its ranks because too many soldiers in positions of authority do not think there is a problem.
Drugs in the military is a risk to the United States national security because it reduce the readiness of our soldier's. Drugs have a negative effect on the well-being of military personnel and it have destructive effects as well. The use of drugs undermine authority and the strict order that is given for military productivity. Drug use in the military is a serious problem, over the years, general abuse levels declined across all branches of the United States military. In the modern time, recent numbers indicate that the problem is once reaching epic proportions.Drug use have been used by soldiers to reduce pain, reduce fatigue and increase alertness, or to help them deal with boredom or panic that come along with battle.
In the past ten years around 17,000 gay and lesbian service personnel were discharged at a cost the US taxpayer of around $500 million dollars. One member of the Legal Defense Network estimates that investigating, expelling and replacing gays or lesbians in the military costs about $30 million dollars annually, and this is the total cost of homophobic discrimination in the US military since the 1950s rests at around $1.5 billion dollars. This shows that the DADT (Don’t Ask Don’t Tell) policy will alleviate a financial burden set on both the tax payers but the US financial crisis as well. Another topic which has come forth in the repeal of the DADT reform is the prior discriminations gay and lesbian service members went through. The reasons
In a more recent study conducted by the United States Department of Justice in 2004, approximately 1 year after the Prison Rape Elimination Act was passed, 8,210 allegations of sexual violence were reported throughout 2,700 correctional facilities. The majority of the incidents reported were allegations of staff sexual misconduct, totaling 42%, and 37% of the incidents reported were inmate-on-inmate nonconsensual sexual acts. Other research suggests that about 1 in 5
National Co-morbidity Survey Report estimates the lifetime prevalence of PTSD among North Americans to be 7.8%. In contrast, the lifetime prevalence of PTSD for women who have been sexually assaulted is 50%. More importantly, sexual assault is the most frequent cause of PTSD in women, with one study reporting that 94% of women experienced PTSD symptoms during the first two weeks after an assault (Brunello, 2001). The disturbingly high rate of PTSD in sexual assault survivors suggest that current therapies for rape victims are not meeting as effective as current needs demand. There is no one treatment for every victim suffering with PTSD, as the disorder can show itself in many ways.
In most violent crimes, guns are used. In the recent years, in spite of many measures taken by the law enforcement agencies, campus violence rate has gone up. The FBI, Secret Service and U.S Department of Education released the study, called “Campus Attacks,”1 on the third anniversary of the Virginia Tech Massacre. It is the first comprehensive look into “targeted violence” on college campuses. The study examined all reported incidents of “targeted violence” since 1900 and found that 60 percent of the 272 cases of college violence have occurred in the last 20 years.
They don’t want to become known as the “snitch”. In recent studies, it has been found out that in the United States prisons alone, an estimated 364,000 males and female inmates were sexually assaulted in one year. Any young inmates that are physically small or weak, have a mental illness, are known as the “snitches”, are not in a gang, or convicted of any sexual crimes are at a higher risk of being the victim of sexual assault. Inmate suicide has been going on for years and is a problem that has not decreased. Newly arrested people who have been taken to a local jail
Sex Trafficking of Children in the United States I As bad as it may seem or sound, child trafficking is actually happening in the world and has been going on for years. Federally funded human trafficking task forces opened 2,515 suspected incidents of human trafficking for investigation between January 2008 and June 2010. Most suspected incidents of human trafficking were classified as sex trafficking (82%), including more than 1,200 incidents with allegations of adult sex trafficking and more than 1,000 incidents with allegations of prostitution or sexual exploitation of a child (U.S. Department of Justice). This concludes that majority of the incidents of human trafficking are women and children being sexually exploited. Therefore, I
Walk a Mile in Her Shoes: Men’s March Against Domestic Violence On average, there are 207,754 victims of rape and sexual assault each year in the U.S. This translates to approximately one victim every two minutes. While the instances of rape and sexual assault have generally been on the decline since the early 2000s, it still remains an issue in the U.S., especially in regards to women’s equality. Nearly one in six women are sexually assaulted in the U.S. each year, most of whom are 18 to 24 years old, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. In response to the prevalence of sexual violence in the U.S., Frank Baird created what is now the national movement, Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, the International Men’s March to Stop Rape, Sexual Assault and Gender Violence, in 2001.
Human Papillomavirus also known as HPV is the most common sexually transmitted disease in the United States.
