The midterm will combine multiple choice questions and open ended questions. Think of the quizzes as preparation for the multiple choice part of the test. For the open-ended part of the midterm, I will pose questions that will test your ability to engage in an “educated discussion” related to Asians in America. See bottom for the grading criteria. I want you to imagine yourself in a discussion where the topic of Asians in American comes up and you are asked to make a comment. Below are the prompts: 1. What is wrong with calling Asians and Asian Americans “Orientals?” 4. This was a line heard on Desperate Housewives: “Can I check those diplomas? Coz I would just like to make sure they are not from some med school in the Philippines.” It was meant to be funny, but what do you think? Is it harmless or not? 5. It seems that fewer people go around using racist words to describe Asians, such as “Yellow Peril,” “J_p,” “Ch__k,” etc. Does this mean that racism against Asians is disappearing? Your responses to these prompts will be graded using the following criteria: - Thesis statement: Put in a sentence or two that states your argument. For example: "I believe that calling Asians "Oriental" is wrong because ... " - Use of examples, evidence, or other information to support argument: Back up your argument.
