2. There are those who prefer to describe themselves as “Hispanic” rather than “Latino.” What does this have to do with racial privilege, and how does this lend insight into the dynamic between race and social hierarchy? 3. How does ethnic identity change according to location and time? Chapter 5: Gimenez 1.
Anzaldúa also talks about how this criticism of learning English can make one be deemed as a traitor to their people. From this confusion of language, new dialects were formed to compensate on the different ideas of what the language should be. It was neither Spanish nor English, but both, a variation of the two languages. Different forms of the dialects are used in different areas and are only appropriate with certain groups and individuals; some of the dialects are so different that Chicanos from different states choose to speak English to each other. “If a person has a low estimation of my native tongue, she also has a low estimation of me.” (Anzaldúa 136) Anzaldúa states that language is part of ethnic identity and should be a prideful part of one’s self.
Even those who view the inherent inequalities of the American system, however, and argue that minorities are in some need of institutionalized help to overcome systemic problems also see the policies Affirmative Action as more of a hindrance than a help. This essay will argue that while certainly biases and inequalities exist in American society, and that members of minority populations are in need of some type of assistance in education and job placement
There may very well be a pattern of groupthink behavior categorically attributable to Asian American intellectuals. It may very well be that most Asian American critics have tended and still "tend to see texts as demonstrating either resistance or accommodation to American racism" and all those Asian American panethnic entrepreneurs may very well be "deeply invested in stable categories of racial identification." But the burden of proof to demonstrate this claim rests on Nguyen's shoulders, does it not? By failing to do so, or rather by choosing not to do so, by not naming names, Nguyen tacitly asks us to simply take his word for it. (This is a polemical strategy not unlike the one found in Garrett Hongo's "Introduction" to The Open Boat: Poems from Asian America, where the disgruntled poet accuses Asian American studies of "facism," "bigotry," and "ethnic fundamentalism," behaving like Ayatollah Khomeinis to the Salman Rushdies of Asian American creative writers.
Censoring a novel because of its use of certain words without examining the context is absurd. Dr. Sarah Churchwell explains, “The fault lies in the teaching, not the book, you can’t say I’ll change Twain because it isn’t compatible with my teaching methods.” When a work contains content that could be considered hurtful it is important to teach the context behind the content, not avoid the work of literature
Textbooks are not appropriate references for this purpose. Plagiarism is a form of academic dishonesty. Copying material from another source and pasting the words from that source into a paper is not acceptable. The objective of research and writing is to read source material, digest the content of that information, and then write a summary or persuasive presentation about the topic or case using the writer’s own words to support various opinions or
The goal of whiteness studies is to reveal and to share new knowledge about a seemingly under-investigated social phenomenon; namely, the social construction of whiteness. In a 1997 California Law Review article, Juan Perea suggests that “In the midst of profound demographic changes, it is time to question whether the Black/White binary paradigm of race fits our highly variegated
In the contrary just like any other theory there are strengths and limitation. The limitations of this theory are that The SIT predicts that group failure will lead to reduced association with the group, but this has been disproven this states that’s this theory is not true cross culturally in collectivist cultures.. There is a study by Chen et al. (1998) that shows that students in USA evaluated the out-group more favorably if they succeeded and their in-group didn’t. this was shown opposite to what Chinese students would do.
Some researchers state that “we are not born with racial prejudices and we also might never have been taught them”. There are two tools that are popular among researchers when trying to understand racism and prejudice. The Implicit Association Test measures racial prejudice that we cannot consciously control. The test is really simple and it asks you to categorize images of faces, such as European white or African American, while at the same time categorizing words, such as evil, happy, awful, etc. The faces and words
