Middle School Observation

My observation took place at a Friday night football game. There were children from pre-school through high school in attendance. I focused my observation on a group of elementary age girls and a group of middle school boys and girls. The elementary age girls were very playful. They had a very happy go lucky attitude and just seemed to be enjoying the time with their friends. They talked about school, the football game, their plans for the weekend, and the homecoming parade and court. They laughed and giggled a lot. Most of the time they walked around, but on occasion, they skipped along. None of the girls appeared to have tattoos or any body piercings. I would certainly hope they do not have tattoos or body piercings other than their ears as I find this very inappropriate for this age of girls. From my observation, I conclude this group of children was behaving in a manner that is appropriate and consistent with other children this age. The second group I observed was a group of five middle school boys and three middle school girls. They all appeared to be friends; however, two of the girls appeared to be in a boyfriend/girlfriend relationship with two of the boys in the group. The other girl and two boys appeared to be hanging out with their friends and those in relationships seemed welcoming and attentive to their presence. This group of children was not as playful as the elementary age girls. They seemed to be in a good mood and enjoying the time they were spending with their peers. They talked about school, other children, sports, shopping, television shows, Facebook, cell phones, the football game, their plans for the weekend, and the homecoming parade and court. The majority of my observation, the group walked around. On occasion, they would stop to talk with other children and adults. One of the girls wore a t-shirts that appeared she made herself in support of the football team. Another girl wore a commercially made t-shirt with the school name and mascot on it and the third girl wore a Hollister short sleeve top. One of the boys was wearing an American Eagle short sleeve t-shirt. Three of the boys were wearing football jerseys, which I assumed are theirs, and the final boy was wearing a long sleeve plaid shirt with the sleeves rolled up. The girls had sparkly eye shadow and a removable tattoo with the school mascot on one of the cheeks. They also wore bandanas as headbands in their hair. They had obviously spent great deal of time in front of a mirror working on their hair and
