The group does have purpose as they plan to create an after-school program which will improve school performance both by the students and the teachers. The group is structured as the Woodson Foundation and the school system will develop a new agency that will draw on resources from both organizations as well as a representative from the NCPIE. This is where the group comes up short from the storming stage as there is no leadership yet. They are still establishing ground rules such as: Will the new jobs be unionized? And Will the Woodson Foundation be able to use hard data?
The professional development meetings inform the teachers of how to incorporate rigorous learning into their lessons and also explains what the district expects to see from the staff. To meet the goals of our action plan, the teachers need to align their lessons with the core curriculum. Professional development helps them stay on task with these strategies. Principals also use out-of-district professional development classes to refine any weaknesses of the teachers in our school building. For example, if a teacher has a hard time with classroom management, our principal will suggest a professional development to address classroom management skills for that particular teacher.
Family system theory it explains why family act the way that they do in different situations. This theory is typically used in family counseling and therapy; much can be learned from examining it in the context of early childhood settings. Family systems theory has been used in trying to understand problems of students in school settings (Sawatzky, Eckert, & Ryan 1993; Widerman & Widerman 1995; Kraus 1998; Van Velsor & Cox 2000). The need to understand early childhood setting is indicates by professional organization so they can prepare early childhood and elementary professional. The concept of family theory is to help each member of the family by influencing and encouraging each other.
A community school has a set of partnerships in place that connect the school, the students’ families, and the community. Community schools bring together community partners, parents, teachers, and administrators to assess students’ needs and identify the resources that are available to meet them. Community schools have an integrated focus on academics, youth development, family support, health and social services, and community development. My school is a community school. The administration of my school work with the community partners to develop a climate that is welcoming to families and students.
Collaborative Learning Community: Cultural Mosaic and Essay There are many cultures that educators will come in contact with in today’s classroom and teachers need to be prepared to provide them with the same level of learning as any other child. However, when students are from different cultures and have more complex backgrounds, the approach to learning can be quite challenging if the teachers has not educated themselves on strategies and techniques to accommodate these learners in the classroom. Therefore, by exploring the African, Indian, Japanese, and Mexican culture of students in the classroom, one will be able to gain insight on how to build an effective working relationship with students, their ways of communication, and learning styles that specifically connect the lesson content to the individual while knowledge and productivity is occurring. The following is a chart that compares some of the cultures in today’s classroom: African Culture Indian Culture Japanese Culture Mexican Culture Norms • Strong sense of family and religious ties. • Extraordinary belief in faith to persevere through any situation that may arise; that being in the classroom or outside the classroom.
So how do you actually implement these strategies into your classroom? The answer might be to have a good classroom management and strategy plan. They would present it to their students the first day of school and then the students would know what is expected of them. Rules in a classroom are very important, the teacher teaches them to the students and the students should follow them without any consequences. Such rules could be: One-student participation or strategies to keep them on task.
A well run classroom provides the environment for teacher and student learning. There are many strategies that can be incorporated into the classroom management plan to ensure that learning is taking place for all students. The educator must decide what strategies will work for their diverse classroom and plan ahead to include these strategies and communicate the expectations to the students. Harry Wong's Pragmatic Classroom Classroom procedures and routines assist in providing a classroom environment that is safe, predictable, and well run. Procedures and routines must be communicated to the students on the first day of school to ensure success of this classroom management strategy.
Data Collection Teachers write down their observations in a notebook after the class is over, they write down which students are showing some behavior problems that might need an intervention, they can classify these records according to the nature of the function they belong too (attention, avoidance, escape, etc). This record is actualized every day so the evolution of individual cases can be followed and later it can be presented to the parents or behavior specialist. Another way to collect data in an indirect way is though the reports of other students that feel that the behavior of a particular student (or group of students) is limiting or threatening the free flow of the academic activities or the peaceful development of recreation activities. These indirect reports need to be written down. Another way to collect data is to talk to the parents of the students when they arrive to pick up their kids or in the school meeting for parents, then the teacher can inquire if the student is also showing behavioral problems at home or if the problems only occur in the academic context.
A teacher can have great power influencing the choices and decisions we make in school and which direction we may take in life. They also have a big demand on them when we consider all the roles they need to take on in the classroom. Teachers are seen as mentors and role models, instructors and educators, inventors and creators, all while trying to control a class full of different personalities, ethnicities and behavioural issues. Is the curriculum at Teacher's college teaching the valuable skill set to be able to handle the upcoming generation’s vast need for focus, attention to their cognitive learning styles and the strategies necessary to competently complete their educations? The following interview I conducted was of a recent graduate of Teacher's college at York University.
Promoting positive behaviour for learning in the classroom In this assignment, I am going to examine the approaches to promote a positive classroom environment for learning in a secondary school. In researching this topic, I found the main mediating factors in creating a positive environment for learning are the school’s leaders, parents, pupil-teacher relationships, classroom environment and lesson planning. My reason for choosing this topic is that I feel my classes are sometimes routine and a matter of learning material and I find it hard to motivate pupils. Initially with my class groups, I think I was too authoritarian, demanding perfect behaviour, silences during lessons, reprimanding pupils for small issues, signing journals, giving out punishments and collecting punishments whereby wasting class time. It leads to confrontations, arguments, poor relationships with pupils and negative environments in the classroom.
