A Midsummer Night’s Dream In the novel by Shakespeare, A Midsummer Night’s Dream a big thing in the story is the plot because it effects everything that happens in the story. Well it is a play that was written in the 1594 or1595 in London. It is a romantic/humorous/fantasy play. What else is important is the theme, setting, protagonist, and the antagonist. The characters obviously play a huge role in the play. Theseus, duke of Athens, is getting ready to marry Hoppoltva, queen of the Amazons, with a four day festival. He hopes his Master of the Revels, Philostrate, to find suitable amusements for the occasion. Egeus, an Athenian nobleman, marches into Theseus’s court with his daughter, Hermia and two guys, Demetrius and Lysander. Egeus wants Hermia to marry Demetrius (who loves Hermia), but Hermia wants to be with Lysander and doesn’t want to. Theseus tells Hermia that she has until his wedding to make up her mind, warning her that disobeying her father could result in her being sent to be killed. But, Hermia and Lysander plan to escape to Athens the next night and marry in the house of Lysander’s aunt. They tell their plan to Hermia’s friend Helena, who was once engaged to Demetrius and still loves him even though he basically rejected her after meeting Hermia. Hoping to make him love her again, Helena tells Demetrius of the plan that Hermia and Lysander have made up. In these same woods are two very different groups of characters. The first is a fairies, like Oberon, the fairy king, and Titania, his queen, who has recently returned from India to bless the marriage of Theseus and Hippolyta. The second is a group of Athenian craftsmen rehearsing a play that they hope to perform for the duke and his bride. Oberon and Titania are at odds over a young Indian prince given to Titania by the prince’s mother; the boy is so beautiful that Oberon wishes to make him
