Jayson Aryee Ms. Crocco AP English 11 30 September, 2013 Toni Morrison’s Letter of Endorsement to Barack Obama The Democratic Candidate election of 2008 was certainly a significant event in the history of America. For the first time, an African-American male, Senator Barack Obama, and a Caucasian female, Senator Hilary Clinton, would compete again each other to become the 2008 Democratic candidate. Contrary to this important event, writer Toni Morrison believes that when choosing a fit candidate neither race nor gender matters. Toni Morrison is the only African- American to receive a Nobel Prize in Literature. Morrison writes a letter of endorsement in order to express her support and hopes to gain supporters for then—senator Barack Obama as the candidate for the 2008 Presidential election.
Senior Immigrant Interview Name: Samantha Doccy Date: 9/14/14 I interviewed a woman named Maribel. Maribel is 83 years old and lives in live at Wood River Village in Bensalem. She moved in 1964 because she wanted her children to grow up in the United States. “I wanted my children to live where they would not be judged for who they were.” Maribel grew up in a very small town in Puerto Rico that was not very accepting of people who were different. She had a gay brother at a time when this was considered unacceptable.
Obama explained how he wanted to make sure that young women are going to be able to compete in the market place. Meanwhile, Romney wants not only men but women to be qualified for his cabinet. This shows how Obama and Romney want to make an impact in women’s lives by giving them more opportunities and help them out. Obama and Romney also shared life experiences during the debate by using Pathos. For example, Obama mentioned how he was race by a single mom and how her grandmother trained people who would end up becoming her
He was the first thing that made her want to help others. “She was devoted to and profoundly influenced by her father, an idealist and philanthropist of Quaker tendencies and a state senator of Illinois for16 years” (Gale 54). Her determination was seen early in her life. Even though many women were advised not to go to college because they were meant for marriage and not education, those days’ women used stay home and run the household while the man works and support the family. Why I think she is a hero?
By the end of his speech he uses a story about a white girl named Ashley telling her story at a campaign about her mother who had lost her job and health care due to her mother’s cancer. Their family had to file for bankruptcy and so Ashley lived the cheapest way she could until her mother got better. She states her reason of why she joined the campaign, to help other children placed in a similar situation as she was and so as each person around the table tells their story of why they join the campaign; however an elderly black American simply states, “I am here because of Ashley” (Obama 500). Obama incorporates a story of unity among Americans of different races and how each helps each other; these are the small steps that he mentions to begin a more perfect union. This story appeals to the audiences emotions and this make his speech effective.
Republican National Convention: Ann Romney After four years of Barack Obama in office, it is time to reelect our new president. Obama and Mitt Romney go face to face in the battle of hopes of becoming the leader of America. The wives of both candidates, Michelle Obama and Ann Romney, stood up to the platform at National Conventions and proclaim to Americans why their husbands deserve the title of president. Ann Romney introduced America to the man she knows better than anyone else, Mitt Romney, at the Republican National Convention. Ann Romney emotionally addresses to all women about the man he was before politics by grasping the audience’s attention with the word “love”.
Obama immediately brought up the Lilly Ledbetter act which was the first bill he signed when he came into office. The act opens up limitations on pay discrimination lawsuits filed after a period of time. Passing bills like the Lilly Ledbetter act is the right step women need in this economy. President Obama says this is not just a women’s issue, but a family and middle class issue as well. Another issue brought up by Mr. Obama is insurance companies should provide contraceptives to anyone being insured.
She organized a two day strike to help cease violence around the MLK assassination. She also helped in child abuse cases, and volunteered in studying the equality of foreign laborers. (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/features/biography/clinton-hillary/) Soon Hillary would meet Bill Clinton and later marry. Although Hillary Clinton would make a strong political name for herself, Bill Clinton's Presidency would make her a household name for those unfamiliar with politics. She would serve as first lady alongside her husband from 1992-2000.
It’s interesting to note that even though Clinton and Obama butted heads on many policies during the 2008 election season, they could be professionals and even lead to Obama naming her as the Secretary of State. It’s also interesting to note that Clinton is rumored to run again in 2016 because of her recent moves of acquiring former campaign advisors to Obama that helped her succeed in 2008 and 2012. Clinton is primed to make a strong comeback. She has reset her entire campaign by introducing life and vitality and a new vision. She has claimed to be more effective in connecting with the American people as well as more wired in with the younger generation.
Barack Obama - “Yes We Can” Barack Obama’s ‘Yes We Can’ speech presented in Nashua, New Hampshire on the 8th of January 2008 is a defining moment in his career due to it’s implications to Obama’s presidential campaign. The speech was presented in Nashua South High School Gym on the night of the New Hampshire primary, where Obama lost marginally to Hilary Clinton. The audience of the speech is the people in the high school gym, but the target audience is the whole of America, as the speech was televised and available to Americans. In this speech, he aims to persuade the people of America that their quality of life can be improved. Barack Obama portrays this by using various persuasive techniques to interest his audience and his famous quote, “Yes We Can.” He uses the unity words “We” and “You” repeatedly throughout the speech.
