But then it takes a hard left turn into science fiction and, beneath the gags, barbed social satire concerning extended adolescence and cultural homogenization.. Large insurers and employers are watching with interest and skepticism to see what happens as demand grows. "It's very nice to say that India, to take one example, can handle Americans, but there are only three to five hospitals there" with enough capacity to absorb a surge, says Ori Karev, CEO of UnitedHealth Group International, an arm of UnitedHealth that offers health consulting services to companies abroad. Moreover, he wonders, can high quality be sustained "with hundreds of thousands of patients traveling for care? I have my doubts." Then there are fundamental questions of safety and postoperative care back
In 1994 he started a project “Luck” involving 400 volunteers who let professor and his team study their private life events in order to make conclusions about their good or bad luck. The results of the experiment were published and the book became a bestseller despite being written in a scientific language. Answering the question whether he really believes that all people can be divided into lucky and unlucky ones, prof. Weisman gives a few examples proving that fact – he mentions a very lucky jewelry shops owner and a very unlucky flight attendant. He does not agree that human life is just a set of coincidences. However, prof. Weisman is convinced that different omens, amulets and lucky charms do not work at all and are nothing more that superstitions.
In 1988 the miracle drug Prozac was the first of its kind to treat depression as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). By the 1990's other SSRI's such as Zoloft and Paxil also hit the marker which hit 9 billion in sales by 2000. Prozac was Eli Lilly's front runner on the drug market but was soon set to be available as a generic, thus losing significant market share and profits. It was anticipated that patients would begin purchasing the severely discounted generic drugs or that doctor's might
The vaccine is the first of its kind to build immunity against two strains of HPV, which lead to 70% of cervical cancer cases in the United States. Merck was on a roll until parents, who were being threatened with state mandates forcing their little girls to get three doses started. Gardasil vaccine is perhaps one of the most controversial vaccines to date. (Lopes) Let’s not forget that Merck is the same company that brought us Vioxx, and knew or should
The Uninsured – Health Care Reform Bill (Legislator Handout) Kelly Dayton May 27, 2011 HCS/455 Denise Morrow The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 is a step towards providing health care insurance to fifty million Americans without health care coverage. President Obama signed the act on March 23, 2010. There are many steps to the bill over the next three to four years. Some major pros or steps include a “50% discount for name-brand drugs in the Medicare “donut hole”” (Healthcare.gov, 2011) and health coverage was expanded to young adults until the age of 26. A very positive but major change includes the Pre-existing Condition Insurance Plans.
LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- The Walt Disney Co. said Tuesday that the weak U.S. dollar kept domestic vacationers closer to home, boosting theme park revenue while growth in the company's film studios and media networks also helped push second-quarter net profit 22 percent higher. Disney said it earned $1.13 billion, or 58 cents per share, in the quarter ended March 29, compared with $931 million, or 44 cents per share, a year earlier. Revenue for the period grew 10 percent to $8.71 billion. Analysts expected earnings of 51 cents per share on $8.47 billion in revenue, according to Thomson Financial. Disney shares jumped 84 cents, or 2.5 percent, to $34.57 in after-hours trading.
Naloxone was FDA approved in 1971 and has been used for decades by emergency medical services for reversing opioid overdose and reviving victims who otherwise would have died (Leavitt, 2010). I decided to do this paper for two reasons, one, this problem is not going away. The ‘war on drugs’ is not a war that we are going to win. But with the availability of Naloxone, it may save lives so that recovery is still an option in this fight. Background Approximately 15,000 people die each year by overdosing on opioids, a rate that has more than tripled since 1990 (Wermeling, 2012).
(Heffron 2012 p.67) Panax ginseng is one of the most commonly used and highly researched species of ginseng. 3 scientific studies were found that studied the psychological effectiveness of ginseng. In the first study of 112 healthy volunteers older than 40 years, the administration of 400 mg per day of the standardized ginseng product ‘Gerimax’ for eight weeks resulted in better and faster simple reactions and abstract thinking, but no change in concentration, memory, or subjective experience. (Kiefer & Pantuso, 2003, p1539) This trial on various psychologic parameters has shown positive effects on reaction and abstract thinking, however no effect in concentration or
Erin Gallagher and Natalie Lukehart Gallagher and Lukehart 1 Mrs. Greenwald Pre-IB English 10 9 March 2012 Organ Selling In the United States, there are now “…more than 105,000 people on the waiting list for solid organ transplants” (Womens Health), yet the list of donors is just a fraction of that amount. This is a controversial issue that has not only risen throughout the nation; but world-wide. Those for organ selling may argue that it saves lives, while those who are against organ selling argue that it is unethical. The black market for selling organs does exist, but what if potential donors were given incentives in a reputable commercial market: a thousand dollars for a kidney or two thousand for a heart? Would this be ethical?
From the 1980’s on, governments around the world focused on pharmaceuticals, as a politically easy target in efforts to control rising healthcare expenditure. - The threat of substitutes: The biggest threat to the pharmaceutical industry is the dramatic impact of generic medicines with exactly the same active ingredients as the original brand, at a lower price. Leading pharmaceutical companies are faced with great difficulties to recover the cost of their R&D investments. - The power of Buyers: Governments and insurance companies may be categorized as buyers in the pharmaceutical industry. A 2008 report estimated that 46 million Americans, over 15 percent of the population, lacked insurance.
