Nevertheless, I continued on with my dad’s support and mentoring to be the best player the Arkansas River Valley had ever laid eyes on. Now that I had my goal of becoming an NBA player in front of me, I wanted to know how to get there. I began by asking my dad questions about salary, work environment, would it be easy to grow as player and what type of education I would need. NBA Salary Expectations As I continued throughout junior high and High school, my attention was quickly drawn to the amount of money that professional players made for playing a sport they love. Salary expectations for this profession exceeded my wildest dreams and I couldn’t even begin to imagine what I could do if I made that kind of money.

Oscar Del Rio APUSH 05/17/10 Period 3 “GLORY ROAD” “Glory Road" was based on a true story of Texas Western's Coach Don Haskins, leading the first all-black starting lineup team to the 1966 NCAA national basketball championship title. Coach Haskins has a lot going against him: first, Texas Western has a poor basketball program, and second, he cannot recruit good white players to the team. Coach Haskins goes to the Northern cities from Gary, Indiana to the Bronx in order to recruit talented black players from the streets to play for his team. At the time there were no black players playing Division 1 basketball in the South this included the ACC, SEC, and SWC leagues. In the 1996-1997 season, NBA’s Michael Jordan was paid $33,450,000 for the year, or just over $1.06 per second, an outrageous amount of money for a player to play the game he loves to play. He was paid $178,000 a day whether he played or not. There is no doubt that professional athletes are talented, but when Kevin Garnett, who is not even a college graduate, makes over 16 million dollars a year, that becomes a problem. While that may seem outrageous, deliberations over pro athletes salaries are nothing new. When baseball’s Babe Ruth was reportedly asked about earning a larger salary than the United States President Herbert Hoover during the Great Depression in the 1930’s Ruth defended his salary in response, “Why not?
