Basketball fans know him as MJ, the champion shooting guard for the Chicago Bulls, and others know him for his Air Jordan brand or role in Space Jam, but Michael Jordan wasn’t always a success. He once said, “I can accept failure, but I can't accept not trying” (Smith 162). Starting at a young age he faced many obstacles on his path to greatness, but never caved. Michael Jordan’s superior desire to win throughout his life led him to nineteen magnificent seasons for the Chicago Bulls, becoming the best basketball player in the history of the National Basketball Association. He was able to come back late that season and in the playoffs scored a record 63 points in a first-round game against the Celtics. The Bulls were swept by Larry Bird and the Celtics, but Michael averaged 43.7 points per game in the series. Again Michael and the Bulls were swept out of the playoffs by the Celtics in the 1986-87 season, but the front office of the Bulls had finally started drafting desperately needed role players for their young star. Jordan won every major award including MVP, Defensive Player of the Year and All-Star MVP in the 1987-88 season, but would fall short to Coach Chuck Daly and the Detroit Pistons in the playoffs, and would do again the following two seasons. Coach Daly designed a game plan known as the “Jordan Rules”, which called for playing him aggressive and physical, also double-teaming his as often as possible. There isn’t a player in the history of the NBA that has come close accomplishing as much as Jordan has over his career. The NBA may see better shooters, or bigger and stronger players then Michael, but no player has ever had the desire to win like Michael, and that is what made him the greatest to ever live. MJ never feared failure or embraced a negative mindset and his positive outlook took him to the top of the NBA. In his most famous quote MJ said, “I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed” (Michael). The only question remaining is will the NBA ever see a player like Michael Jordan ever
