June 4th, 1974 – Mrs. Mitchell arrived to work at her scheduled time and punched her time card for eight hours (hours she had not yet worked). She was questioned immediately by the Center Director (Mr. Smith) which turned into a fairly heated argument that drew Mrs. Stoope in as well. In the course of this interaction she referred to both of her supervisors as “birdbrains”. This argument took place in the common room where many of Mrs. Mitchell’s coworkers could hear the conversation. Mr. Smith succeeded in moving the conversation into his office when Mrs. Mitchell became agitated again, resulting in her termination.
Erin Brockovich In the movie Erin Brockovich, played by Julia Roberts, it starts out with a woman, Erin, trying to get a job at an office with absolutely no work experience at all for the job she is being interviewed for. As Erin is driving away in her “junky” car, she was side-swiped by a doctor who blew through a stoplight. Upon meeting with her attorney Ed (Edward) Masry, played by Albert Finney, she was in hopes of winning her case considering she is an unemployed, single mother with 3 children to support. After losing her personal injury lawsuit with the doctor that hit her, Erin strolls into her attorney’s, Ed’s, office asking/begging him for a job for reparation for him losing her case. Ed graciously, but not happily, gives Erin a job working as a file clerk in his office.
The character Dr. Kim Reggis acted impatient when he wanted to know what was wrong with Becky. For example when he was in the waiting room with his ill daughter him being impatient caused him to be become very upset. When he went to the counter to see if he could get his daughter in to see a doctor sooner and was told that he had to wait just as long as the other people in the waiting room he said “I’m going to complain about that woman. Kim said 65”. Kim thought that since he was a doctor there he could get special treatment.
According to the Expectancy Theory the motivational force is found in three factors, Expectancy probability, Instrumentality Probability and Valence. Employees of Supervisor A have several problems here. I believe Instrumentality Probability is applicable. From the brief discussions with Supervisor B it is apparent that the employees do not believe that performance–reward relationship is equal. Will they get a greater reward, better pay, or a promotion if they exceed the goal put to them?
He locked her in a room with a customer and she fought back, angering the customer. “The boss” was very angry and hit Srey, leaving a welt on her face; she was then raped and beaten. To keep her compliant, she was forced to take a pill known as “the happy drug.” Along with her fellow captives, Srey was kept naked and forced to work seven days a week, fifteen hours a day. They were fed scarce amounts of food as customers were dissatisfied with overweight girls. One night some of the girls made a daring escape from the tenth floor apartment that they were housed in, going out onto the balcony to traverse a thin five inch plank across the twelve foot wide chasm between buildings to a balcony on a neighboring building.
People must listen to criticism first before deciding to use it in their life. J.K. Rowling, a famous author who wrote the Harry Potter series, was not so successful at first. She was rejected by 12 publishers, and took longer than a year for her books to be published. The publishers that rejected her told Rowling that her that she needed to give up because her books were bland and unoriginal. Rowling listened to criticism and then brushed it off, she kept on looking for a publisher, and eventually found one.
She was first admitted to the hospital after she slit her wrists with a knife; this is the time she had become despondent, irritable, and out of control at home. The night before our interview, she had slammed her hand against the wall in an outburst of anger and frustration stating “I can’t stand it anymore” (Oster and Montgomery 41). Depression is defined as mood changes and other behaviors that are categorized from a small-scale sadness to extreme feelings of sorrow and thoughts to commit suicide (Oster and Sarah 43). In teenagers it occurs frequently and around a period in their lives when their identity begins to change. This tends to occur at a time when both males and females are trying to be unique from their parents, have gender and sexuality issues, and are making decisions for their well being.
Finally it will describe how these obstacles help us discover our true selves. In Cisneros essay, she describes her conflict with her desire to be a writer and her father’s expectations of her. Cisneros states, “Being only a daughter for my father meant my destiny would lead me to become someone’s wife” (Cisneros 1). This expectation only pushed Cisneros further into her passion, hoping that one day her writing would win her father’s approval. After attending four years of college and two years of graduate school, she still felt her father viewed her education as a waste because she had not married.
