Haile East Central University Abstract The production of methamphetamine and the abuse have increased drastically during the past decade in the United States. There has been an increase of more than 500% in the US from 1992 to 2002, from 10 to 52 per 100,000 people age 12 years or older. Because methamphetamine can be manufactured locally from commonly available ingredients, according to simple recipes available on the Internet, makes it unlike other imported drugs. Methamphetamine users and producers are often the same, having an effect on both physical and environmental conditions. The route of administration can be in a multitude of ways, most common are, injection, snorting, smoking, and ingesting, we are finding a wide variety of users in all social economic classes. This article will examine the history and effects of methamphetamine use, prevalence on our society, and the population most prone to become addicted to the chemical. Methamphetamine has been described as the worst drug problem in the United States today. We are witnessing methamphetamine emerging as a significant community health and safety problem and the increase in treatment programs, hospitals emergencies, and criminal justice agencies illustrates this increased problem.
