Mesopotamia and Egypt were similar and different in many ways. Both civilizations developed a form of writing. Sumerians developed cuneiform then simplified writing even more by using ideograms like a star would indicate heaven. Egyptians developed hieroglyphics. Egypt and Mesopotamia had the Tigris and Euphrates while the Egyptians had the Nile. However, the Nile was in contrast with the Tigris and Euphrates much more predictable, and would only flood once a year for about three weeks. Both climate have drought and moderate weather but only Egypt has sand storms. Egypt was protected by a deserts. Make good invaders. But Mesopotamia between the Tigris and Euphrates River with abundance. In addition, the area around multiple tribes. There was a scramble for fertile areas. The civilizations of Mesopotamia, thus creating a blend of old and new parents. Unlike Egypt. Both civilizations built immense monuments, Sumerians built Ziggurats as monuments for the gods while the Egyptians built Pyramids for tombs. Both were polytheistic, although Akhenaten and Nefertiti attempted to convert Egyptians to monotheists by believing in Aton as the only god but they were not successful. Sumerians produced The Epic of Gilgamesh describes the wanderings of Gilgamesh in search for eternal life. Egyptians produced The Book of the Dead which describes after death the soul becomes a part of the divine. Religion and authority and Egypt were closely related. In Mesopotamia each city state had different own god while in Egypt everyone followed the same thing. In Mesopotamia, they established patterns for civilization to take place. Later on Mesopotamia was unified by Hammurabi and the Babylonians. In Egypt, civilization began because of the Nile and rich soil. It allowed Egyptians to live without depending on anyone else.
