1/18/12 America: Melting Pot or Salad Bowl? Imagine a bowl full of salad. It has lettuce, tomatoes, carrots, etc. all mixed together but not combined. Each ingredient is still by itself. Now imagine a big pot with a big, hot fire underneath it. Everything is being melted together because of the heat of the fire underneath it. So, which one is America more like, a salad bowl or a melting pot? It’s more like a melting pot than it should be. Everyone thinks it should be a big bowl of salad but it’s not. Americans normally “cause” any foreigners to change by looking at them weird or singling them out just because they dress according to their culture and tradition. No one should have to give up how they view the world or how they view their life just because others think they look or act weird. Normally, the parents or elders tend to keep their tradition alive. It’s their kids that change. Their kids are the ones who don’t want to practice the tradition as much. They want to be like their American friends. America needs to be more like a salad bowl. It’s not right if you are basically forced to change your ways because of us, rude, Americans. Tradition/Culture is what forms a group of people. With out culture, everyone is the same. Many other countries say that America is lazy and non religious. That’s not entirely true though. America works hard, but not hard enough. The lazy people are the ones that other countries look at. They assume America is non religious because Americans don’t practice religion as much as we should. Sure, some still do, but others? Not so much. An example of America being a Melting Pot would be the book “The Joy Luck Club” written by Amy Tan. She explains in the book that the mothers want to keep their tradition and culture once they get to America. But as their daughters are raised, they slowly grow up around the American culture. Their
