It has even been considered mystics, saints, or possessed by evil spirits or servants of the devil. It has been said that it is present in all existing cultures from the pre-literate to the most highly advanced (Korn, 2001). Two Thousand years before the birth of Christ, an Egpytian book called Book of the Heart described a mental condition with symptoms resembling schizophrenia. This is not necessarily true. Although the delusional thoughts sometimes lead to violent behavior and sometimes they are associated with violence, only a small group of people with schizophrenia become violent and only a small group who commit criminal violence have been diagnosed with schizophrenia. * Schizophrenia is a rare condition. * A person with schizophrenia should not have children. There is a one in five chance that their children with inherit this disease, if both parent have it, then it increases to two in five. * Children cannot develop schizophrenia. In rare cases, children as young as five have been diagnosed with this condition however, most people with this disease don’t show any signs until adolescence or young adulthood. * Street drug can cause schizophrenia. Street drugs do not cause schizophrenia. There are similar symptoms with this disorder and substance abuse, but one does not cause the other. The signs for schizophrenia are different for everyone. Symptoms may develop slowly over months or years, or may appear very abruptly. The disease may come and go in cycle of relapse and remission. There is a range of alternative treatments other than a hospital setting. Family involvement can help improve the effectiveness of the treatment. The patients that have families that support them have less frequent relapses. Medication is an important part of treatment but are only half of the solution. Patients with this disease should get treatment that includes social rehabilitation. These include anything from basic living skills, how to handle day-to-day tasks, job training, job placement and work support. Working helps them recover by being productive and getting a sense of identity and worth. Giving training and support, most people with schizophrenia can work. The way people respond to patients and their family members influences their course of illness and quality of life. Negative attitudes can push these people and their families into hiding the illness and drive them away from getting the help that they need.
