The Medical Marijuana System in Canada Comm 1200 Section 2 Cannabis, also known as Marijuana, has been used throughout history around the world for good or for bad, depending on your point of view. There was a time when many western doctors had forgotten about the usefulness of cannabis in relieving pain without any addictive properties or side effects. Since the year 1996 when California legalized medicinal marijuana there has been massive controversy between doctors, patients and the government. The legalization of medicinal marijuana in Canada has been an extremely heated argument between the different parties. When you’re in pain nothing is enjoyable, you can be irritable and unpleasant to be around. Medicinal marijuana is one of the leading drugs for pain relief. When cancer patient are on chemo it can be very nauseating, marijuana can relive that feeling after just ten minutes of taking it. For those patient suffering from HIV/AIDS marijuana can assist in stimulating their appetite. “The Institute of Medicine panel concluded that marijuana has some therapeutic value for pain relief, control of nausea and vomiting, and appetite stimulation, and should be studied further in order to develop new cannabinoid drugs. It also concluded that marijuana has limited effectiveness in relieving the symptoms of glaucoma. No evidence was found that marijuana acts as a gateway drug to more dangerous recreational drugs.” (Levy, 1999) Living with HIV/AIDS can be extremely difficult and very painful. You lose the desire to do anything you stop eating, you get depressed, you are nauseous all the time. “Despite the limited amount of data available on the use of medicinal marijuana in the general population, it has been suggested that persons with HIV/AIDS are the largest group of medicinal marijuana users in both Canada and the United States.” (Furler, Einarson, Millson, Walmsley, Bendayan, 2004) While this may be true there are other minor diseases out there with the same symptoms so why should it be so hard for them to get medicinal marijuana? They experience the same pain and depression as those suffering with HIV/AIDS and cancer yet doctors refuse to sign the papers for them. It was only recently that doctors started to sign papers for war veterans to assist with their post traumatic stress disorder, “Only New Mexico explicitly allows people with posttraumatic stress syndrome- a common condition of veterans returning from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars- to use medicinal marijuana.”(Woodward, 2010) Once seeing what was
