For most individuals, the internet is no longer the curious phenomenon it once was. Individuals from all generations now turn to email to communicate to one another, read online newspapers to learn about local and world events. Many accept these aspects of the digital age as part of a daily routine. With no end to technological progress in sight, new ways of using technology are appearing daily. One of the more recent internet innovations is social networking, which has come to mean individuals using the internet and web applications to communicate in previously impossible ways (Weaver & Morrison, 2008). Social networking via social media began as a trend among internet-savvy young people and has become something of a cultural norm, changing the way we think about communicating with family, friends and peers. It can generate infinite opportunities for individuals to express themselves, create a wide circle of friendships, seek advice, overcome social anxiety and allow people to connect with similar interest groups. Within the educational environment, social networking can also provide schools with constructive practices to improve and promote learning and seemingly limitless opportunities for communication and collaboration. However it should be considered that, there are also aspects of social networking that increase the possibility of new risks to the self including a loss of privacy, bullying, harmful contacts and more (Livingstone & Brake, 2010). Young people at the schooling age will be the main focus of this report, outlining both the positive and negative characteristics of social networking.
