The 1980s was known as the Thatcher era as this was when Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister maintaining power throughout the 80’s. Thatcher encouraged people to be entrepreneurs and make us much money as possible and it also promoted greed and individualism. To an extent the 3 sources agree that the 80s were are greedy decade as shown in source C as “the rich continually flaunted” this is showing both individualism and greed. Source A is a picture of the cast of Dallas all dressed in extravagant clothing and suits with cow boy hats on, all of this very expensive and it is focused on “the lives of rich selfish characters” source B explains, continually flaunting their wealth as source C explains. Therefore all of these sources agree that the 80’s were greedy, thus agreeing with the statement.
Cousin Lymon proofs himself to be the cousin of Miss Amelia through this old photograph when it was even hard to distinguish the faces of the two ladies in the photograph. Cousin Lymon comes to find Miss Amelia because he is very selfish and poor at the same time. McCullers tells the readers when Cousin Lymon enters the town “the bag was full of all manner of junk – ragged clothes and odd rubbish” (8). Cousin Lymon did not own anything valuable. He was poor and he decided to fool Miss Amelia as she was the richest lady in town; so he can have a place to stay and use her for his needs such as food, money, clothes and perhaps also planned to make Miss Amelia fall in love with him so he can take advantage of her wealth.
Tom Walker’s Greed and the Consequences By Talana brown The short story “The Devil and Tom Walker by Washington Irvington is a story that symbolizes the devastation effects of greed and the consequences of it. This story not only symbolizes greed but it also symbolizes evil, selfishness, religion and hypocrisy. In this story, the main character “Tom Walker” is a miser who worships money more than he does his miserly wife. A miser is a person who is reluctant to spend money, sometimes to the point of forgoing even basic comforts. Tom Walker was a greedy and selfish man who lived an immoral life of greed.
It does, of course, which leads to the tragic demise of Lennie. This lays to rest the elaborate plan that George and Lennie, and later Candy, had of a better life. What little hope they had of achieving their comfortable little cottage and living off ‘the fatta’ the lan’’ is crushed the moment Lennie breaks Curley’s wife’s neck. This is, of course, a premature demise for Lennie, as well as Curley’s wife. It condemns George to living the life of every other hired hand, which is working for a month for fifty bucks, then just blowing it on whiskey and a whore, then repeating the process.

In The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald uses the characters to demonstrate the corruption and degradation of the American Dream. He even uses the characters, namely Tom and Daisy Buchanan and Jay Gatsby, to demonstrate the demise of those who are brave enough to attempt to attain its illusionary goals. There are different types of wealth represented in this novel. The Buchanans are wealthy people. Jay Gatsby is also wealthy but would rather simply be affluent.
Mammon and the Archer Analysis of the opposition between love & money O. Henry uses o lot of stylistic devices, such as: exaggeration, incongruous comparisons, malapropism, misquotations and so on. In his stories we find inhabitants of big cities and ranches, highway outlaws as well as self-made business tycoons. And one of the popular and famous stories is “Mammon and the Archer” Mammon is the God of riches and the symbol of wealth, The Archer is a symbol of love. So we can say that this text is about money and love. Of course at first we can think that this text will be about love and passion with happy end, without any interesting facts, but in reality it isn’t so.
Last but not least, destruction of spirituality is seen through the event; Simon’s murder. Simon who was the link between them and spirituality severed means that spirituality is greatly disappeared. “At once the crowd surged after it, poured down the rock, leapt on to the beast, screamed, struck, bit, tore. There were no movements but the tearing of teeth and claws. […] Simon’s dead body towards the open sea.” (Golding 169, 170).
In the end, both Scar and Claudius end up dying the same way as they killed their brother. Both of their right hand man ends up turning on them.
