Popular Music and Society Briefly discuss what you understand by the term ‘socially constructed identities’ in general and then discuss the factors in popular music that, according to Frith, enable it to fill its social functions. Socially constructed identity in general A socially constructed identity refers to an identity that is formed and influenced through social interaction with other people and groups which may include family, friends, community, religious groups, sport groups etc. Thus a person’s identity is both formed through internal and external forces working together. Identities may also be constructed through formal training (school, college, university)where a person is aware of the learning process and it may be socially constructed through informal training where a person learns through observation and is unaware of the learning process taking place (communication abilities etc). According to Frith, popular music serves a social function in four different ways. The first is that people enjoy popular music because of its use in answering questions of identity. People who enjoy the same music style are automatically drawn together in emotional alliances like at music concerts and clubs. Popular music also helps people to decide their likes and dislikes and where/how they spend their leisure time. Music concerts make it possible for musical and non-musical people in interacts and form part of the music making process. Secondly, music gives people a way of managing the relationship between people’s public and private emotional lives. Music helps people give shape and voice to emotions making their feelings seem richer and more convincing. Music helps words, images, body language and gestures be experienced more intensely which is evident when watching a film.
